Academy Awards Greenroom
I thought today would be an appropriate time to do a post on the Academy Awards. Now, I, of course, did not choose to actually watch the awards themselves. Watching millionaires give other millionaires golden trophies for movies that I did not see, is not my idea of a good Sunday night. Watching them walk around in dresses that I cannot afford and do not recognize any way, is also not my idea of fun. But that being said, being a slave to modern design, I was intrigued by where they hung out while they were preparing to hand other millionaires awards and I found it here. Apparently, Waldo Fernandez, designed the Architectural Digest Greenroom and here is a photograph of it.
Cuban-born designer Waldo Fernandez has long-established ties to Hollywood and working with celebrity clients. While studying architecture and design at UCLA, Fernandez worked for Academy Award-winning set designer Walter M. Scott, creating sets for the well-known Planet of the Apes and Dr. Dolittle. I have to admit, I did see both of those films and set design for Dr. Dolittle, did not appear to me to be that major of a production. I seem to remember Eddie Murphy yelling at a bunch of animals in the forest, but I'm sure Mr. Fernandez did a great job with that forest. Fernandez's first major interior design job was for the Oscar-winning film director John Schlesinger -- pretty good start for a then-budding designer. Over the past 30 years, Fernandez's portfolio has grown to include celebrity clients like Brad Pitt, Keanu Reeves and Elizabeth Taylor. Again, do you really think of Keanu Reeves as a bastian of style and good taste? I don't associate the two, but again, Fernandez's room speaks for itself.
The backstage lounge for the 2012 Oscars was inspired by Hollywood's glamorous era of the 1930s and '40s. The design is said to reference the work of film actor turned interior designer Billy Haines, who decorated director George Cukor's Beverly Hills home, the location of many legendary Hollywood parties.
The greenroom features a spacious living room with an outdoor terrace just off the main lounge. The dark room and cozy furniture arrangements are sure to provide a relaxing environment for Oscar honorees. According to Architectural Digest, champagne will be served in the greenroom from a custom-designed bar for the first time ever.
Fernandez's design delicately balances masculine and feminine aesthetics while giving a nod to old Hollywood glamor. Here are our favorite parts of the sophisticated decor -- and tips for recreating the look.
Gray walls. The dark color creates a cozy space that allows colorful accents to stand out. Get the color used in the Oscar greenroom, DKC 98, from Eagle Paint & Wallpaper, Inc.
Custom book jackets. The book collection here was custom-created by Juniper Books and features images from the archives of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. The look could easily be re-created at home with decorative wrapping paper.
Soft lighting. Circa Lighting prepared a combination of overhead lights, wall sconces, chandeliers and table lamps to create an overall glow in the room while still highlighting the artwork and fabulous 1930 Bathing Girl sculpture by William Zorach.
Thanks goes to http://www.sheknows.com/home-and-gardening/articles/951195/backstage-at-the-2012-oscars-architectural-digests-greenroom for providing the photographs and a lot of the analysis used in creating this post. Give credit where credit is due. Also, thanks to Mr. Fernandez. I may not have watched any of these movies, recognize the best actor winner, or really have that much interest in acting in general, but I would not mind hanging out in Mr. Fernandez's room for a while. Well done.
