You know a series is good when you truly hate a character in it. That being said i DESPISE Jia ,like holy shit she is probably the most self absorbed, self pitying narcissistic piece of shit

however i did just finish the sequel to grace of kings by ken liu, wall of storms, and it was a huge turnaround. the first half (like 800 ebook pages) was kind of tedious cuz it’s peacetime and the only courtly intrigue seems convoluted and unnecessary, and also for some reason the author keeps coming back to these four schools of philosophy? Like the characters will be talking about things and they will say “that’s very fluxist/patternist/incentivist of you” for some reason and it drags the plot. BUT halfway through a bunch of white people on dragons with poor stamina invade and things get super wild.

 If you’ve read the three body problem series by cixin liu (which ken liu translated) you can see definite similarities between the styles cuz both authors get really into the science and engineering aspects of world building. Like grrmartin would be satisfied with being like, “oh yeah this magical substance that conveniently burns really well” but ken liu explains electricity in terms of glass and silk and when one side invents a way to electrocute the dragons, he describes the chemical process they use to coat intestines with a thin layer of gold to separate charge. (i dunno, i took e&m last year) i guess it makes sense cuz liu is a programmer and a lawyer and grmmartin is a procrastinator. 

anyway, i continue to recommend grace of kings and wall of storms to y’all, but be forewarned that fantasy worldbuilding is sometimes tedious when you’re not just copy pasting tolkein and medieval europe.
