Craft Brewing Coffee At Home
So many of our customers have become fond of Wallhouse Coffee’s craft brew options. Generally speaking craft brews tend to be a bold, full flavored cup of coffee. This also allows our customers to choose a different bean options than what we have for the brew of the day.
Wallhouse Coffee also offers several different craft brewing merchandise options in our store; located in Sugarcreek, Ohio. These traditional methods of brewing coffee offers you a special coffee brewing experience. This often provides a new appreciation for the coffee drinking experience.
The brewing merchandise offered in store is essentially priced at Amazon prices. Though you can pick your favorite up in-store, we decided to offer this quick blog to show a few of our favorite options you can order online. Here we won’t be going into the “how to”, but we will provide a neat list of coffee gift ideas for yourself or others.
Five things to consider when craft brewing for the perfect coffee cup:
1. weigh your coffee 2. style of craft brew (Pour Over, French Press, Chemex, etc) 3. water quality 4. time your brew 5. beans matter
Weighing Your Coffee
Though it is true that weighing your coffee is the best way to get a consistent cup of coffee day after day, it isn’t necessarily a must. Yes, our baristas weigh the coffee every day to ensure the most consistent coffee possible for every customer. If you are at home and are okay with not having everything down to the gram; use a tablespoon. My rule of thumb: 1 heaping/rounded tablespoon per two cups of coffee/water.
If you do want a scale, something like this is a great option!
Outry Coffee Scale with Timer This scale is a great option because it also takes care of your timing step from earlier. Simply start your timer and you’ll know when your brew is ready. No pulling out your phone or buying a stopwatch. It is a little pricey at $25.99, but still a great choice.
Etekcity Digital Kitchen Scale This is a #1 Best Seller on Amazon and is more streamlined. Simple and to the point, simply weigh your coffee. No timer built in, but it isn’t too hard to check the kitchen timer or use a phone. Really any food scale should work.
Choose Your Style
Choose your brewing preference! This is the fun part. We definitely recommend trying our craft brew options at Wallhouse Coffee before committing, or use a friends. Not only are there some variables in the taste and consistency. The actual brewing process is completely different experience.
French Press The french press is an iconic and perhaps the most recognizable. As with all of these options, you can spend as much or as little as you want. The reason I selected this particular options is because: One it was a middle of the road Price and Two it features extra screens and a coffee scoop for measuring. The French Press can tend to be slightly gritty on the final cup; particularly if the grind is too fine. The beautiful thing about the french press is that it is easier to get a nice bold cup of coffee. Another benefit is you just pour your hot water in then let it sit while you finish getting ready, etc. Click around online and find the look and style that matches you.
Osaka Pour Over The Pour Over brewing experience is so authentic and such a fun experience. The linked Pour Over is far more than you need to spend for a great cup of coffee; but, wow is it beautiful! You can buy a whole rig like this, for about half the price even if it might not look like this. For me, these are pieces of art and reflect your style. You can leave your favorite brewing tool on a shelf for friends to see. Want to keep it even more simple? You can also simply order the top half (needs to be made for that) and it will just brew into your favorite mug. A huge benefit to the Pour Over is it is VERY smooth with not gritty residue. It can be a little harder to get a super strong cup of coffee (compared to the french press) because it runs through more like a traditional brewer; but stronger. My last point isn’t necessarily a pro or a con. Since it is a pour over you will stand there and take the 3-5 minutes to pour the hot water over the coffee grinds. This is a very relaxing experience which I love; unless you like to multi-task. *Oh yea, your going to want a pitcher with a skinny neck.
Chemex Ah, one of my favorites. I love these devices because of the beautiful glass design. You really get to enjoy the brewing process. Very similar to a pour over you will want to use a skinny necked pitcher for a gentle consistent slow pour. Essentially the difference between this and the pour over is the design. It is a continuous glass piece that curves. Another big difference are is the paper filter that goes in the top. To learn more about it visit their site. Glass ware goes great in any home or office. With the other two options you do have some flexibility in choosing what fits your budget. Since Chemex is a brand name, they do charge slightly more (unless you go with one of their smaller options). On a budget, just go with the Pour Over (then again you can spend just as much depending which one you select).
Water Quality
I don’t have too much to say on this other than water does change how your coffee tastes. I you have good water you’ll have better coffee. However, if you don’t have the best water. Try running your water through a water filtering pitcher or device before brewing.
Beans Matter
At the end of the day you can buy the most expensive coffee brewing device, but if you don’t have great beans; your coffee isn’t going to be good. Find your favorite coffee beans try brewing them in a conventional coffee maker vs a craft brewing device and let us know what you prefer. As with everything, it’s not for everybody. Also, if you have a large group sometimes a traditional brewer is simply more convenient. Craft Brewing is just a great time and a great conversation piece.
