I could not find who it was by however, I prefer the idea of not knowing as it makes me think in depth about the drawing questioning myself: why was it there? what could it be representing? and the formal elements/media rather than thinking of what the artist thought of when he/she did it. This piece I really thought could relate to my project as it is covered with messages within the bricks of the walls to me it symbolises a story of what happened within those walls and leaves the viewer guessing.it seems on the outside like a negative environment from the dark tones contrasting the light through the prison/jail windows. However the positive messages reflects upon the person who might have been there, recognizing all the positives throughout their life when kept in a hostile place.

I found this piece to be interesting as the way it’s been composed and recycled using second hand book pages creates the nostalgic feeling of time seeing the colour of the pages look old and faded. It represents to me like a collection through time.

Jan Vanriet has used his family photographs during the period of WW2 and created a scrapbook from them representing his rich family history to reflect on the failings of the world and the corruption of politics and power. I find work like this to be fascinating, as it portrays realism and an emotive depth of humanity and his family’s life. The themes he conveys within his work are of love, loss, identity and destiny.

For my project I think this is a great example of how I would like to think about using secret messages and com-positioning them in different and effective ways for my story such as this artist.
