34. Why are you wearing my sweater? “Because It smells like you”
44. “You’re an idiot” “but i’m your idiot”
It was his first day back at the station since the accident. He still didn’t feel 100% like his old self again, but he was getting there. Getting back to work, and being around his friends again should do the trick. He had barely passed through the gates before being forcefully tackled by Ma Qianli.
“Qianli, be careful! He only just recovered, we can’t send him back to the hospital this fast,” Huo Yan berated him before giving Li Yanliang a hug himself. “Glad to have you back, Liangzi.”
“Glad to be back,” Li Yanliang replied.
Almost the entire squad had come outside to greet him at the gate. They ushered him inside after Ma Qianli had taken over his bag. Inside the rest of the squad seemed to be waiting for him, with a small cake to celebrate his return. Greeting all of them, he realized one important person was missing. Wang Dayin was nowhere to be found.
Luo Jie sat down next to him at the table and patted him on the back. “Don’t ever do that again, okay?”
“Do what? Return to the station?” Li Yanliang joked and elbowed Luo Jie in the side with a fond smile.
“Get hurt like that,” Luo Jie said seriously, “It was quiet here without you… And I don’t think Dayin would ever forgive you.”
Li Yanliang swallowed thickly. Wang Dayin wouldn’t forgive him? What did that even mean… Before he could ask, though, Luo Jie had gotten up and walked away already. As if Wang Dayin’s absence hadn’t already spoiled the party for him a bit, this only made it worse.
They hadn’t seen each other for months. Only a few days after the accident his parents had him moved to a hospital in his hometown so they could take care of him and he had stayed in his hometown until a doctor had cleared him to get back to work. Very kind of his parents, but it had really sucked not being able to see his friends for all these months. Not seeing Wang Dayin for that time had been the absolute worst. Ever since they had joined the fire department, they had spent every single day together. Their relationship quickly going from best friends, to best friends with benefits to… something more. At the time of the accident they had only finally started to acknowledge their feelings for each other, so it really couldn’t have happened at a worse time.
His mood completely spoiled now, he thanked everyone for the warm welcome and made his way back to his room. He doesn’t know why he was surprised to find Wang Dayin there, they were roommates after all. He was sitting on his own bed, arms and legs crossed and he was frowning adorably. Li Yanliang wanted to kiss him. But he couldn’t, Wang Dayin was mad at him, that much was clear from the way he turned his back to the door as soon as he walked in.
Li Yanliang couldn’t help but notice that the bag of clothes he had brought was open on his bed, and Wang Dayin was wearing a very familiar looking sweater that was too big for his small frame. That brought a smile to his face, so he wasn’t that upset with him.
He decided to play along for a bit, he just quietly stepped into the room and started unpacking his stuff, putting his uniform out for the next day. Wang Dayin didn’t seem to like that, with an exasperated sigh he laid down on his bed and made a big deal about crossing his arms again.
“Are you mad at me, Dayin?”
“Yes,” Wang Dayin replied curtly.
“Then why are you wearing my sweater?”
“Because it’s the only thing in this stupid station that smells like you.”
Li Yanliang laughed, which made Wang Dayin turn over in his bed with a huff. “The only thing? Are you sure?”
“You weren’t here,” Wang Dayin murmured.
With a sad sigh, Li Yanliang turned around. There were tears in Wang Dayin’s eyes. “I’m here now,” he tried.
Wang Dayin just shook his head. “No you’re not,” he rubbed the mattress beside him absentmindedly, “and either way, it’s too late anyway.” He turned around again with a pout.
Once again Li Yanliang couldn’t help but laugh. This boy was such a brat. He pushed him forward roughly, so there would be more space in the bed, and then got himself comfortable beside Wang Dayin. With a slightly annoyed puff Wang Dayin pressed his back roughly against Li Yanliang’s chest and pulled his arm around his waist tightly.
Chest filled with a pleasant warmth, Li Yanliang felt the need to hide his happy smile against Wang Dayin’s back, even though the other boy couldn’t see him. Because of that he completely missed that Wang Dayin had raised his head so Li Yanliang could slide his arm under it, which resulted in a soft kick against his leg and an annoyed sigh.
“You have been gone too long,” Wang Dayin complained, “I have to do everything myself.” He turned around, pulling Li Yanliang’s arm underneath his head and forcefully wedging one of his legs between his friend’s. Then he wriggled down the bed a bit so he could press his face against Li Yanliang’s chest and sighed softly.
“Happy now?” Li Yanliang patted his head softly before carefully pressing a kiss to his forehead.
Wang Dayin nodded before pressing himself even closer. They laid in silence for a while. Li Yanliang couldn’t stop thinking about how this is what he had been missing so much for these past few months, how he finally felt whole again.
“I missed you, Dayin,” he confessed quietly. Wang Dayin mumbled something incoherent against his chest, which Li Yanliang decided to interpret as that he missed him too. “Why are you mad at me?”
Wang Dayin shook his head, pressing himself closer again. “Tell me, so I can make sure to never do it again.” Still nothing. Li Yanliang let his hand, that was softly rubbing Wang Dayin’s back, slowly slide lower and lower, until it was on his ass and then he jiggled it softly until it pulled a soft, annoyed giggle out of Wang Dayin.
“Stop it,” he complained after which he sighed deeply and looked up. “You left,” he murmured, “I came to the hospital and you were gone...” He swallowed thickly and the tears were back. “Nobody would tell me where you were, someone said you were rushed out in the morning and never returned. I thought you were dead…”
“You thought I died?” Li Yanliang asked. He couldn’t help but laugh a bit in disbelief. “I just had a broken leg, why would I die from that.”
“I don’t know! You had surgery for it, tons of things could’ve gone wrong,” Wang Dayin grumbled.
“It’s going to take a lot more than a broken leg for you to get rid of me!”
“You’re a jerk for leaving and getting hurt,” Wang Dayin muttered.
Li Yanliang laughed. “And you’re an idiot for thinking I died from a broken leg.”
“Your idiot, though.”
“Mn, my idiot,” Li Yanliang said before pressing a kiss to his lips.
