Merida shrugged at the thought of tea. "If I'm gonna be drinking tea, then I should do it when I want to, not when my mother wants to have a silly tea party." At Jane's surprise, she narrowed her eyes. Yes, she was expected to know some geography, but her mother's mood towards her caused her to brush off geography as useless. Obviously, it wasn't as useless as she assumed. "Well, that sounds better than what I do with my family." She responded. "How do you know so much about the world anyway?"
"Well, my father is a professor of zoology," Jane explained, "and he's got an expansive library at home. I wasn't able to attend school, much, but I love to read. I've learned a lot about the world from books."
Merida frowned at Jane saying she didn't have a mother. Though she could barely stand the Queen, she didn't honestly know how it would be without her presence. "Tea parties are a waste, I would much rather be out shooting arrows." She commented, remembering how she would have barely enjoyed having tea with her mother as a child. The girl raised an eyebrow at Africa. "Africa? Is that somewhere far away?" Merida questioned curiously.
"I like tea," said Jane a little defensively. "But I agree, I hate the tediousness of sipping it socially with a party of girls who don't genuinely want to be there..." Jane's eyes widened at Merida's ignorance. To be sure, Jane was terrible at geography herself - but this? How could a young woman, a woman who seemed barely younger than Jane, be left in such ignorance of the world around her when she would some day be expected to rule a small corner of that world? "Er, yes," Jane managed finally. "It's a large continent that's far south of Scotland and England. Daddy and I are going to study gorillas in the jungle!"
"Oh, well I guess I should visit it sometime," She said nonchalantly, though she knew what her mother would say to that idea. Merida frowned at her question, as her own answer irritated her. "Mother thinks I should be doing more ladylike things, like sipping tea or some nonsense like that. Though, I have went out of the grounds sometimes, but don't tell her that." She let out a giggle behind her hand, remember how clueless her mother was at Merida escapades.
Jane giggled, too. "My aunt Isabel is like that. I - er - well, I don't have a mother - " she bit her lip. "So my aunt, who was my mum's older sister, has taken it upon herself to raise me in a ladylike fashion. Balls, and corsets, and tea parties and so on...I'm only glad I've been mostly left to Daddy's tutelage. Aunt Isabel threw a fit when she found out we were going to Africa!"
Merida watched Jane curtsy, obviously confused and a tiny bit frustrated. "Well, there's no need to bow." She grinned at her actually using her name, rather than some royal term. Merida nodded at her question energetically, "Yes, I come from the Highlands. England? I have heard that name once or twice, I think." She shrugged, trying to think of when she'd heard of England before.
"Yes, it's just south of Scotland," Jane said automatically. Then Merida's words sank in and she frowned, concerned. "Haven't you ever been across Scotland? That is, I would have assumed that a princess had more mobility than otherwise."
Hello, I'm Merida, or Princess. I fancy Merida more though. And y' are?
"Oh!" Flustered, Jane swept a curtsy. "My name is Jane. Jane Porter, your Maj - Merida." She looked up, smiling. "You're Scottish? I'm from England. Well. Obviously." Jane flushed.
