Armistice Day/Wapenstilstand
Today is Armistice Day in Belgium. This is the day when we remember the end of World War I and also remember the victims of all wars all over the world.
On this day there a lot of ceremonies and I’m going to talk about two of them.
Tomb of the Unknown Soldier
On this day the King will lay flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Brussels to remember all soldiers who died durring war.
Last Post
Every day at 8 p.m. the Last Post will be played underneath the Menenpoort in Ypres. The Menenpoort is a monument build by the British and has the names written on it all unknown Commonwealth soldiers who died during World War I. The Last Post has been played every day since 1928, except during World War II. The Menenpoort is build in Ypres as it is a town in the Westhoek. This was the Belgian part of the Western Front and a lot of Commonwealth soldiers died here in the trenches during WOI.
On the 11th of November there is a special last post ceremony to remember WOI.
Around this time you will also see a lot of people wearing poppy's. This is a symbol of WOI and comes form the poem In Flanders Fields.
On this day we remember all those who have died during war. And hope that one day there will be no more war.
