This is a straight-up copy of some promotional art I saw for Forsaken World: War Of Shadows. I know nothing about the game, but I found the character so beautiful I HAD to draw her. Here’s the original artwork:

Frankly the fact that I made this five freaking years ago is insane to me. And it makes me wonder what my art could look like today if Id kept my ability to draw small details and continued to practice every day.

see the problem w war of shadows is it defies titles at all. like what else am i gonna call it? Limbo Walker? thats not really what its about. Agent of Order, or Agent of Chaos? sure but thats still only half the story. Ren’s Life is Terrible? bingo

ok so the anti-young adult person gave me some pretty good suggestions so

aight what DO i remember abt this thing

i know it was in part inspired by a dream i had about this big empty stone area w a cliff, thats what the spirit world is based off of. and there was an obelisk and a lion and a winged girl. the obelisk became the statue ciel gets trapped in, the lion became nae, sort of, and the winged girl became jadwen. ive long since dropped things like wen having wings (she only ever did in the spirit world but still) and nae having the form of a lion in the spirit world (or going to the spirit world at all). and the obelisk being an obelisk and not a statue.

i think there was more of an emphasis on refugees as well, initially, but i... dont really remember where i was going w that and it didnt make it into even the first draft regardless

cieldor also started off as a rlly old guy, i mean, he is rlly old but like he actually looked old, like hed been teaching at the school for like 40+ years kind of old. then when he came back no one recognized him and no one had any idea what a limbo walker was and they werent even called that. there was also going to be a love triangle. i mean there is kind of a love triangle now but the original was gonna pit ren and nae against each other and. no.

uhhhhh water turned red when the shadowfolk were near? some of the shadowfolk were basically zombified people. they were called the tainted. there were a lot more caves and crevices and crevasses, idk what kind of landscape that was even supposed to be tbqh. i think ren fell underground at some point but that mighta been in a later draft.

ren was totally down for learning to fight too she was like all for it, forget magic hand that girl a sword. the weapon of order was also a sword and only a sword.

oh!! the kids just kind of like joined the soldiers and helped them like, scout out the area? for some reason?? also everything was covered in tar? sometimes theyd find people being attacked and theyd try and save them, and then the ones that died kept telling ren to go to kitenaxin lol. except it was called the charred mountain.

actually the scene where she became an agent (tho i called it spirit fighter then lol) was one of the better ones. that and a scene where she got overwhelmed by like, too much magic contained in her small body and started dissolving and jay was there like holy shit ren KEEP IT TOGETHER. but i had to remove that one bc it just. doesnt work anymore and also its really really obviously, uh, inspired by dreigiau. i had to change a lot of things for that reason lol, i was def reading it for the first time around the time i was writing the first draft (which was called half shadows then. hm.)

i dunno, i think there was a different sort of mood i was going for back then but its. gone. long gone. at any rate i pretty much already know what i want to change in the current draft, and frankly this entire rewrite was done to change things based on prior decisions, etc. so like. its close to how i want it NOW if not how i wanted it THEN, and frankly i was??? 15??? so what i wanted then probably isnt even worth pursuing lmao
