Song Review: John Mellencamp feat. Bruce Springsteen - “Wasted Days”

How many minutes do we have here, John Mellencamp wonders on “Wasted Days.”

Featuring Bruce Springsteen, the track is akin to “Cherry Bomb” + 25 as Mellencamp gives up on looking back at the good times and looks forward to the inevitable as the accordion turns melancholy.

How many summers still remain/how many days are lost in vain/who’s counting out these last dramatic years/how many minutes do we have here … /we watch our lives just fade away to more wasted days, Mellencamp and Springsteen, who sound like carbon copies of each other, sing.

The track marks the first collaboration between the pair and announces the 2022 arrival of Mellencamp’s as-yet-untitled next LP. Results may vary as “Wasted Days” is a glass-half-empty bummer or a glass-half-full kick in the ass.
