Have you seen African animation? No? Rising Ghanaian animator and illustrator, Comfort Arthur aims to correct that with Naughty Nii. Comfort Arthur is using her “Naughty Nii” animations as a revolt to the norm of western animation that flood our screens and libraries. The series will document the exploits of a toddler and his family at the festival.
Drawing on the unbridled and sometimes destructive curiosity of kids of the festival, Comfort’s work approaches the topic of representation of Africans in the media by Africans from a creative, light-hearted, comic perspective which challenges the mainstream portrayal of African animations. The Naughty Nii Series, originating from the spirit of a carefree African child, comprises life size models of the character and his father, which will complement a series of A3 prints where the flat illustrated characters pop out of the photographs.
Comfort Arthur’s Naughty Nii Series will be displayed inside the historic James Fort Prison which will be open for the first time in 10 years for #ChaleWote2017!
Over a dozen local and international artists will be taking over the cells and courtyards of this historical relic with everything from photography to sculptures.
