What A Time To Be Alive
“What a time to be alive.” Yes, it’s a quality mixtape constructed by Drake and Future; it’s also a sentiment, the title that is, of today.
Without a shadow of a doubt we are living in the Civil Rights movement of today. The fight against injustice is alive and well on many facets. There’s the fight against police brutality, racism within our institutions of higher learning, injustice through the criminal justice system and beyond. America seems to be plagued of a conscious and its citizens seem to lack morals and values built not on faith and justice, but antipathy, fear and partisanship.
The America we live in today is troubling and downright scary. There is the threat of terrorism against this country from forces such as ISIL, with the the false idea that all Muslims are terrorists. However, we choose (the majority) to ignore the fear and terrorism that is present in our own country. We dare not talk about the fear that enters a black man’s heart and mind when they’re followed by a police officer or confronted. We dare not talk about how a white Christian, Dylan Roof, walked into Mother Emanuel AME Church and killed nine innocent black parishioners. We dare not talk about how black men are shot down senselessly, while white males are arrested and treated respectively for far worse crimes. Instead, we play the victim time and time again thinking our sins will go unaccounted for and unnoticed.
It pains me to see our nation at the place it is, but the signs have been evident. We have chosen to ignore the warnings not only as a nation, but as individuals too. Persons such as Donald Trump don’t rise to popularity by surprise or mere chance. Instead, they rise and stay because they are the mouthpiece for those who dare not speak those sentiments due to the consequences. Trump, seemingly, has nothing to lose compared to those working a 9 to 5 and cannot afford to boldly display and voice their disdain for another based on their creed or race. It’s damning and shameful that a dogmatic and hostile person as Trump is praised and still in the presidential race. While our President is called every name in the book, but President Obama. Nevertheless, it displays to me (a young black male) just how racism still hinders and plagues this country.
This month, African American classmates here, Georgia Southern University, stood in solidarity with Concerned Student 1950 at Missouri. In turn we began to protest and challenge the institutionalized racism present here at Georgia Southern, tangible and intangible. I was prepared to be called names, looked at strange, lied on and seemingly whatever else by persons who did not know me, us or the cause. I was prepared for those things; I wasn’t prepared for the falsehoods from those I “thought” were colleagues, friends or Christians as I am.
The greatest disappoint in this current day are those, mainly referring to Christians here, who see nothing wrong with injustice. One might say it’s apathy, but that’s just too easy and even convenient and considerate. What we, maybe I should say I, see are believers who choose to further propel fear, hate, lies and the more because one is different from them. As long as one is working to their benefit, for example: a black football player scoring a touchdown is fine, but the moment he speaks out against racism he’s an ignorant person; just another nigger. Is this 1963 and the segregated south?! No, it’s 2015, but the actions of this country and its citizens say otherwise.
The continued propaganda, developed and showcased by our media and politicians, is one of the many avenues that prevents individuals from developing their own thoughts. Instead, the right listens to conservative media and has the distorted view that all blacks are thugs, all Muslims are terrorists, we don’t have a gun problem, President Obama is incompetent and only they have the solution. While the left listens and views liberal media, dismissing anything a conservative may have to say and deem it wrong. What a crying shame.
This nation is far from God not just on its laws and principles, so are we as people. Yes, all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, but it’s a damn shame that we continue to fail to do as 2 Chronicles 7:14 commands. “if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” Until we sincerely adhere to the word of God we will continue to be at a standstill and fail.
Instead of confessing our sin, humbling ourselves before God, praying, seeking his face and turning from our wicked ways…we’ve continued the practice of old. There is the continued practice of ignoring the poor, neglecting the true victim, enabling the majority and shaming the oppressed. I love to say, “until you change your perception, you will never see another’s reality.” So, I ask you this, do you see the problems of the day? Can you see them beyond your warped perception of an individual? Are you using your abilities, gifts and talents to better all or just a few? Why has white America failed to realize blacks are still enduring racism? Why can’t our Congress get anything passed and stop blaming President Obama? Why are we not submitting to God? I could ask a plethora of questions, but I’ll leave that to you.
This nation is one built on principles of freedom and equality, but the evidence is far and wide to back up this claim. I feel safe saying this; for America to prosper we will have to sincerely submit to God and cease from the dogmatic patterns we’ve continued and enabled. As my spiritual father and Pastor, Donald Chavers Jr. stated, “America is sinking and it’s our task, God’s children, to win this spiritual war. This is not just carnal, it’s spiritual.”
Therefore, do not dismiss this day and time in which we’re living. Pay attention to what’s transpiring, as no one can afford to walk aimlessly.
