surprisingly these assignments were easier for me than my previous shape studies! In this course I learned how to break down complicated objects into their most simple shapes, as well as how to use comparative measurement. I’m feeling more confident drawing with charcoal, although I still had some trouble laying down smooth tone. Over all I’m pretty happy with the outcome. And with this I am finished with my fundamentals (yay!!) Next I’ll be working on head and portrait.

My thoughts 💭

My first few studies were pretty tough despite the fact they were simple shapes, however I was already expecting a challenge. 90% of what I draw now is digital, plus I had never really drawn with charcoal before. Not to mention Watts was introducing me to a whole new way of holding a pencil! Basically I had a lot of new information and techniques to learn. But I did have a lot of fun and honestly it was kind of refreshing to draw in a whole new way than what I’m used to. I’ve been receiving lots of helpful tips from classmates and feel some improvement! I’ve advanced a bit further in the program now so I’ll be posting more class work soon :))

Friday Night Live: Figure Quicksketch

Most of schedule dictated by what he is teaching or working on.

When he was a student, he tried to have a strict schedule.

Tuesday - head drawing day. Vanderpool book

Wednesday - Figure day - Bridgman. Elbow study.

Working 25 hour job, didn’t have too much time to work on art, so created a schedule on what he will work on.

Always had a master study. 

He chose to do art professionally because he was only good at art.

Good points: You can’t shortcut the process. Go in and draw.

Week 2 of head lay in. I’m learning so much in each class, getting good advice and seeing new ways to think, but I still have a lot to study! The difference from first to (nearly) last at the bottom is really exciting though!

My first long pose figure drawing in years! I’m really rusty, but the students and teachers at Watts are really supportive and inspiring! I’m going to try to post everything I make this summer, even if I’m not so happy with the work. Hopefully I’ll show progress!
