Theodore ‘Theo’ George Windsor

theodore: give to god.

theo: divine gift.

george: farmer.

windsor: windlass + bank; riverbank with a winch.

i gave theodore this name because it is of similar sound and length to the name ‘nathaniel’ which was his name when this was first written in 2016, before i met my husband... nathaniel. he is not religious, not a farmer, and cannot swim.

Samuel ‘Sam’ Norman Desmond

samuel: god has heard or name of god.

sam: god hears.

norman: northener.

desmond: descendant of the man from southern Munster.

i gave sam this name because it could be shortened to a unisex three letter word, to be frank. he is a love interest to one of my characters and a close friend of many others - he needed a possibility for nicknames. he is not religious, not from the north, not from munster, and lactose intolerant.

Cordelia ‘Cordie’ Dylan Alpin

cordelia: heart; daughter of the sea.

cordie: heart.

dylan: born from the ocean.

alpin: the son of the blond one.

i gave cordie this name and nickname because there was a girl who rode my bus - when i drove a bus for elementary school - who had this name and i always thought that it was so cute. i love the meanings for this name. she is all heart, all love and smiles and hard work in the favor of her friends. she dreams of a house by the ocean, but she is not blonde.

Rory Nicolai Nowak

rory: red king.

nicolai: people of victory.

nowak: a newcomer.

i gave rory this name because it’s on the right side of unisex - some people think that it is strictly a girl name, others think it should strictly be a boy name. rory is nonbinary, and their identity is the last to be found out. they are a newcomer in their victory, though they do not have red hair... most days.

Harvey Dean Jackson

harvey: eager for battle; strong, worthy.

dean: valley.

jackson: a son of jack, god has favored.

eager for battle is one turn of phrase for harvey, and definitely one that fits him. i gave harvey this name because the only harvey i could think of off the top of my head was the one from sabrina the teenage witch, and he seemed charismatic enough to match the energy that the harvey in my head put out. harvey is not a valley nor the son of jack, but he is every bit everything else.

Celeste ‘Ellie’ Marva Tudor

celeste: heavenly.

ellie: shining light.

marva: mistress of the house; renowned friend.

tudor: theodore; give to god.

ellie and harvey are the closest thing to religious in this cast of characters - though neither of them believe in god specifically, they believe in a higher power. i gave ellie her name because she is beautiful [ heavenly, a shining light ] but she is not untouchable. the name meanings are a nice surprise.

Alysa Caroline Eaton

alysa: noble.

caroline: strong.

eaton: river, island + enclosure, settlement.

i gave alysa this name because i knew an alysa when i was in school, and my character reminds me a lot of that person - strong in a quiet way, but kind of goes along with the flow and keeps her chin up even when she’s feeling down. though it takes her a while to get there, alysa will live up to the meanings of her first and middle name, though she has no interest in islands.

Progress Update (you knew the next one I posted was going to be a long one)

I hate my life.

SO... I got through chapter eight (projected 15 chaps altogether) and had to mostly start over rework basically everything because it just wasn’t fucking working. Which is why I hadn’t posted a progress update - it kept feeling off.

Here’s the thing... Lucius isn’t a nice, jolly fellow - but he isn’t Voldemort or the Dursleys either. Draco is his only heir, his only son, even if it’s not the son he wants.

Book Two of my little thingy is going to have a lot of Lucius and Draco angst because when I try anything else, Lucius Malfoy pops the fuck up and gives me a giant finger.

The main thing I had to tackle with this one is Lucius being responsible for the Chamber of Secrets being opened. Like I did with The Incident, I am exploring why a grown-ass, seemingly intelligent adult would do such a thing. I had originally planned on sticking the canon Lucius motives...

What are those, you might ask?

Glad you did, because since I won’t be able to explore it in my story, I’mma post them here - in another post, in case all you care about is the progress update.

Anywho, that has now since changed completely. Lucius’ motives are tied directly to his concern and opinions of his son as he is in this fic. As such, I’m having to write an entirely different first chapter because, try as I might to avoid it, I need to lay the basic groundwork for it.

Serious question - who here cares if the first chapter features mostly Draco’s home life, a little bit of ‘where’s Harry?’, and a bit of Ravenclaws thinking they’re geniuses just to have their families/Slytherin friends point out their idiocy?

Because if we go this route, I think I can close off the summer by the end of chapter two. Even so - this new angle will create additional scenes between Draco and his father as well as Draco with the Slytherins. The projection is 17 chapters. Also a serious question - is that okay? Or would you guys prefer I find a way to trim that and focus mostly on Harry/Draco. ( Also, Harry/Draco is still in there. This new angle actually creates the opportunity for Harry to see family in a way he never did in canon and makes him be the only one who’s like, ‘He’s your dad, Draco. You’d regret it if you don’t try’.)

Third serious question... How do you feel about the following:

This new angle will not color Narcissa in the usual badass-actually a good person-misunderstood person most good!draco fics do. I can’t really find a way around it.

This will be my take on it, though - Draco in this really is a good!draco. He had such a horrific trauma experience not to be. Therefore, he’s not entirely in this gray area but over there in the ‘Light’. As such, Lucius will represent the ‘Dark’, and Narcissa will represent the ‘Gray’. I don’t want to spoil anything, so I’ll say taking this angle will result in a conversation between Narcissa and Draco at either the end of Two or the beginning of Three that will basically lay out three main things:

Sometimes it is healthiest for oneself not to save someone.

Sometimes it is healthiest for someone to take the ‘easy’ route because that is literally the only thing they have it in them to do anymore.

And, basically, just because someone wouldn’t piss on you if you were on fire doesn’t mean they would just let anyone burn.

So yeah. That’s where this is. Reply, message, answer in a reblog, just let me know! (Even if you don’t, I’mma progress where I am anyway, so no pressure)

Theodore Windsor was walking home from the park when he met Isabel. He thought she was a hallucination from sun poisoning - the ugliest rat that he’d ever seen, if she was even a rat in the first place. Out there in broad daylight without a care, talking up a storm as if that was completely normal. She followed him home among protests, and she turned him into a hero.

Dusk is everything that Theo could never be. He is strong, physicality and personality wise. He is quick of mind and body, he never falters, he knows how to say no and mean it, and he never goes back on his word. Theo is the man behind the mask, all of sixteen years old and terrified. He loves it. It scares him how much he loves it, but that is just another shade of his terror.

What Dusk is not good for, what Theo is not good for, is the team that follows his hero revelation. Groundfall, charismatic and positive. Everest, steadfast and warm. Scratch, wild and determined. Lilypad, gentle and brave. Crow, stoic and resourceful. Wolfie, bright and nervous. Heroes just like him, like the hero he wants to be, and in a city that does not accept the need for heroes in the first place. They have a long battle ahead of them, and the enemy may not be the worst of it.

I’ve been sick for a week now and incapable of doing much which sucks cuz I’ve wanted to draw so bad lately but just knew I couldn’t manage. But I’m starting to feel better... still not 100%, but better. So I fought thru my sinus issues today to redraw Bunsen, a hay burner (developed by scuttlebuttin) that Royce has in an AU where he’s an NCR Ranger gone rogue. Since I’ve also been playing a lot of Red Dead Online, I’ve got a red roan coat Breton I named after Bunsen, so I pulled some of that influence into this version, too.

A little bit fan-species, a lil bit Breton and pronghorn, a lil bit I’m Sick And Drawing Horses Has Always Been Tough.

“Okay, but what happened then?” Theo interrupts before she can get into it- before they can get into it. Though Isabel had called him a hero, assured him that was the reason that they were partners, he struggles with the idea of it - he hasn’t done anything truly heroic yet. There is no heroism in the act of learning.

theo

theo is sixteen years old. he has been sixteen years old for a few months now, and he is scared to death of getting older. what happens when he hits seventeen? eighteen? will he be expected to move out, move on with his life when there is no one else to raise his siblings but him? theo was a dad before he was a man, and that says more than even he realizes.

theo is alone until he is not. terrible at making friends, worse at realizing that he already has some, theo is resigned to being alone forever. he is alone until isabel - before she is isabel - finds him on the street and begs for a beautiful name. he names her and she is his, they belong to each other, and his home isn’t quite so lonely anymore. how strange is that?

dusk

dusk is timeless, or at least he would like to be. he shrivels under the newscast, the people that dub him and others as cryptic kids when he hasn’t felt like a kid in so long its hard to remember when he stopped. dusk wants nothing more than to be alone, because he can never be alone with the feeling of isabel’s presence, her warmth in his chest, it’ll be okay.

but being alone isn’t really an option, and that is what makes him nervous. dusk bristles under companionship, under a team that he never asked for. he gravitates towards one or the other, has falling out after falling out and is it worth being a hero if it means being a team? yes, yes, yes. but when will the cost be too great? and how will he know that it is?
