This Wednesday we're loving installation art from American artist and photographer Sandy Skoglund.

Object repetition and bold colours frequent Skoglund's work featured in elaborate sets, which the artist designs, builds and then photographs featuring live models amongst the objects.

When we noticed the store opposite us on Stirling Highway was up for lease we had no idea we were going to become neighbours with party royalty - Hire Society! We’ve been over to check out their spacious new showrooms a few times now and every time my desire to plan a party grows stronger. Hire Society has everything you could possibly need to hire for an event! What I especially like is that their hire products suit any theme and that it doesn’t matter how small or big your function is – they cater for everyone. Next time you’re in our store you should definitely pop over the road and check them out.

  open house perth

I went to the inaugural Open House Perth last year and loved it! It’s a chance to tour some of Perth’s most iconic destinations, a lot of which you don’t even know exist. Most of the destinations have guided tours which I found to be really informative and interesting. The lines weren’t too long at the more popular buildings but you have to plan ahead as some destinations are only open on one day! Last year I managed to see the State Theatre Centre, Council House, Gordon Stephenson House and Perth Arena on its opening day. This year I’m looking forward to touring BHP Billiton at Brookfield Place, the WA Ballet Centre and the Traffic Operations Centre. Get involved on the 2nd & 3rd of November!

monogram caffe

A few Saturdays ago Emma Devonport came into Annie P. Paperie and told us all about Monogram Caffe of which she owns. It sounded so lovely we had to go and try it out for ourselves! Monogram Caffe is located within The Grove Library, a state of the art environmentally friendly building just opposite Napoleon Street. The café has a very welcoming, casual atmosphere with native flowers, plywood furnishings and cute food signage made from luggage tags and label maker text. Saba and I sampled a different home made cake each and thought they were both delicious. I’m not a coffee drinker but I hear their coffee is also great and very reasonably priced!

we're loving: august edition

ace pizza

We had all been eager to check out one of Perth's newest restaurants, Ace Pizza and a work catch up was the perfect reason to head into Highgate and eat some great food. Not that we need an excuse for an Annie P girls night!

As you step into the restaurant you can't help falling in love with the retro American diner styling. They have comfy booth seating, a huge green neon sign and interesting street art on the walls. It definitely got busy so we recommend booking in advance like we did.

Like their name, the pizza was definitely ACE. Pizza choice of the night went to Mr. Fredrico consisting of: artichoke, garlic, roquette and pecorino. For those not interested in pizza, Sarah wouldn’t stop raving about the ‘mushies n polenta’ from the wood grill. In addition to the mains the soft serve with various compliments was simple, retro and fun. We would consider going back just for dessert! Ace also catered to our various dietary requirements (vegetarian, pregnant, no pork, gluten and lactose free - we are a difficult bunch!)

Attentive quirky staff in the cutest uniforms and a bathroom stocked with Aésop hand wash rated high in our books!

elouise and the infinite squeeze

We are loving the funky tunes of local band Elouise and the Infinite squeeze at the newly revamped Claremont Hotel on Friday nights. Cocktails and some funk and soul music is just what the doctor ordered after a big week at work.

The cocktail bar opens at 5 and the band starts at 8, playing all your favourite funky tunes from the 60s right through to today. We are especially loving their cover of OutKast's Roses (jaws drop when the seductive Eloise drops her inner gangster and raps like a boss!)

Even more reason to come along and get down, the band features none other than the brother of our very own Tilly, so you'll often catch her while you're there!

we're loving: june edition

typika

I usually don’t head west from work so hadn’t yet spotted the bright mustard exterior of Typika. Bob however had been raving about this new Claremont restaurant so I was very eager to visit and see what all of the fuss was about. As soon as I walked in there was so much to admire about the industrial style fit out. Think beaker pendant lights, communal tables, an open kitchen and a shiny coffee roaster sitting behind glass. The food impressed me even more! We shared some perfectly crisped potato and sweet potato chips, beef ribs that fell off the bone and delicious crispy chicken. Other than great food, Typika’s biggest focus is on providing first rate coffee and although I’m personally not a coffee drinker I’ve heard their's is amazing!

Mer Mag is one of my go to blogs when I want a dose of creativity. It’s written by Merrilee who is a talented illustrator and mother to three young children. Her blog is based on playing creatively with children but you don’t have to be a parent to find it inspiring. Posts vary from creating art to making diy toys, home celebrations, room decorating and children’s clothing. Mer Mag is so easy to read and I love how Merilee makes the simplest of diy’s look so damn good!

Finding Perth’s newest bars, restaurants and most unique events is something I thrive on. We Love Perth is a website that makes fulfilling this addiction of mine so much easier. It was created in 2011 by two Perth-ites, Jelena & Claire, who dreamt of being able to educate people on how great Perth is. On the website you can find maps of recommended bars, restaurants and shops, a calendar of events and a blog that is updated very regularly and includes interviews with Perth creatives and my favourite ‘Treats for your Thursday’ - a guide to what’s on that weekend. There is so much content you’ll never be able to say you have nothing to do again!

gordon street garage

Gordon Street Garage is a new restaurant located in West Perth’s industrial area. The building was formerly an auto electrics garage and the open plan fit out references this with old signage and furniture custom made using wood and steel recycled from the garage. The owners want you to feel like you are hanging out in a friend’s backyard shed, eating food grown in their veggie patch. You should definitely stop by here even if it’s only for the lovely floral tableware!

Recently I have been made aware of the phenomenon that is Black Milk Clothing. I don't know how I hadn’t heard of them earlier as I now see their nylon pieces everywhere! Think amazing printed leggings, bodysuits, dresses and more. Plus they have designs suited for every taste and are made here in Australia not in some third world sweatshop. Words can’t really explain so just go ahead and check them out!

You have probably seen some of Kyle’s art before as he is based in Western Australia. Kyle, who sometimes goes by his alternate name Creepy, describes himself as a painter and installation artist. His artworks have an overall serene feeling and he often uses the same figures, geometric patterns, and nature themes. I got to check out his recent exhibition at Turner Galleries and wished I could have purchased something! I was first drawn to the cute flower arrangements in teacups at Beans & Bunches as they are such an affordable and fun way to incorporate flowers into your home! All Stacey (the owner) aims to achieve is to create happy experiences through flowers and I think she definitely succeeds. She can design beautiful arrangements in a wide range of styles for gifts, weddings or even corporate events. You can find Beans & Bunches in Arcade 189, just off William Street in Northbridge.

anya brock

Anya is a local artist/illustrator who started out working in the fashion industry but after 8+ years decided it wasn’t for her and switched to painting. Her previous fashion experience is evident in her paintings depicting sensuous, sexual and innocent faced girls. Anya also has a fixation with painting birds and zebras. Bright or pastel colours are mostly used with black outlining and her paintings usually feature lots of paint drips. You can view her  recently painted murals at The Bird in Northbridge and Ootong & Lincoln in South Fremantle. Some of her paintings were also seen on the front of Perth’s Urban Walkabout guides.

Solange Knowles is the trendier and more alternative younger sister of Beyonce. She broke into the music scene at 16 and has previously released two albums. Hype has only just found Solange though with the release of her new EP, True. The lead single ‘Losing You’ was released late last year and due to rave reviews she has been busy ever since touring her new songs around the world.

sue lewis artisan chocolatier

We first met Sue when she rushed in last year to get some tags created to use in her Wedding Upmarket stall. She generously presented us with some of her delicious truffles as a thank you and we have been enjoying her chocolate creations since. Bob has also been pleased to discover that Sue now has a store in Subiaco and it’s conveniently located on his way to work! With Easter coming up in a few weeks you should definitely swing by and see what chocolate masterpieces Sue has made. If the chocolate eggs artfully decorated with gold leaf on her facebook page are anything to go by I’m sure everything will be very impressive.

Jessica was born in Perth, studied illustration in London and now lives in Melbourne. Fortunately for us she managed to squeeze in a brief six months working at Annie P. Paperie where she designed some of our beautiful papers. You may think this is a little biased including Jessica in our ‘we’re loving’ blog post but most of us have never actually met her before. I was perusing the blogosphere the other day and came across the awesomeness of Studio DIY. It’s written by Kelly who lives in LA and is all about do it yourself creating for celebrations. Kelly will inspire you with ideas and party tips for all sorts of occasions (at the moment she’s focusing on St Patrick’s Day) and most of them are affordable and easy to make. Plus Kelly said she ‘could spend all eternity in a paper store’ so she’s our kind of person.
