We Are Us Years ago I gave my first public speech. I was in college. I was the business student of the year. A point that is still full of irony to me. I had just recently read a poem by Brother Francis. Can’t remember his last name at this moment. He was a former professor of one of my professors. This was all before everything was published on the internet and everybody knew everything about everybody. The Stone Age of the 1990’s. All I knew then, as I know now, of Brother Francis was this one singular poem. And in it, he questions who we are and who we are going to be. It was the only thing that I read that gave me the greatest understanding of indeed who I, you, we are. Right now, we have collectively seen us, the larger us, behave in such a manner that is both terribly heart breaking & eye opening (for some). And, our collective consciousness hasn’t just seen this once or even twice. No. We’ve been sitting back and watching us show our asses quite spectacularly for a while now. If ever there was time & commitment to show our awful ugly, it appears to be now. “A” for effort. “A” for execution. There are many who desire to go back to the better days of yesteryear. Only problem, yesteryear was so so bad for so so many. Then there are those who have no expectation of it being good or ever being good. Because, well, the system itself is flawed and bent to white supremacy. The system is doing what it was always meant to do: deride and break. While I know that there is no perfect spot of action or heart swelling goodness that we all can pin point on the same axis. It’s likely, the y & x axes hold differing intersecting points for us all. Mine, across the horizontal x axis by 2, and up the y axis by 5. Yours, the reverse. Or something else entirely. Which got me thinking about Brother Francis.
