Tony is entirely aware that he shouldn’t be here. 

But unlike Stark Tower, whoever designed the security for this new Avengers base wasn’t Tony Stark ( obviously. ) bypassing the security isn’t too hard, now that Tony’s getting more up to speed with twenty-first century hacking. And he’s not breaking in ----- he hasn’t broken anything.

He’s not even sure what he’s really looking for. Answers, obviously, but Tony doesn’t even know what question he’s asking. Ohh, he has a lot of questions ( that’s not unusual for this boy ) about Iron Man, about the Avengers. There’s only so much information Tony can find on the internet and while he knows his father has most of the answers he’s looking for, he’s just not giving them to Tony. Which, okay, he’s used to that. ( Some things, at least, haven’t changed. ) He can find his own answers. He’s good at that. 

----------- A flash of blue and red in his peripheral vision, and Tony startles as there’s suddenly a suited figure in front of him. “Shit, man! Give a guy some warning!” And then, head tilted to the side ------ “Oh, hey, Spiderman. Which one are you? There’s two of you now, right?”

It’s been nearly two years since the Snap. The world is recovering. Moving on. Tony’s moved on --- at least, he likes to think he has. A new house, what feels like a new life ---- Iro.n Man comes in second to his duties as a husband and father. 

Yeah, maybe he’s moved on. Maybe he doesn’t still have nightmares about Tha.nos, Titan. Peter crumbling to dust in his arms. The flash of green light as Strange gave up the timestone for him. The endless reaches of space, stretching out in front of him------ 

He wakes in a cold sweat early in the morning, the sun only just beginning to light up the sky. He stands at the window for long minutes, trying to breathe. But when he turns to head downstairs he’s interrupted by FRIDAY. She sounds hesitant. Uncertain. ( Tony’s pulse skyrockets. ) Spid.er-man, she says. There’s been a verified Spi.der-man sighting in the city.

A quick explanation and goodbye takes five minutes. He’s in the city ten minutes later. 

Just like every other city in the world, whole streets and neighbourhoods have been left abandoned, as people moved and adjusted, unable to fill all the empty spaces left behind by the dead. Tony hates these ghost towns, the proof of his failure. But he soars through the streets, down towards queens, in and out of bright lights and crumbling brick. For a few minutes he’s just a bundle of uncertainty, nerves, half-convinced this is all a dream. Until he sees him. A figure, red and blue, swinging over the city. Tony’s heart leaps in his chest, a painful thud as he speeds after him.

“Hey---- kid. Spid.er-man!” 

The suit is different --- a different shade of blue, white highlights, the spider emblazoned on the chest is bigger. And the kid himself is taller. It’s not peter, he tells himself again, it can’t be peter, he’s dead, don’t get your hopes up----- 

And yet Tony can’t squash the spark of hope in his chest as he watches the figure swing towards him. 

The Spider-Man speaks first, voice deeper. older. ( Peter would be what--- eighteen now? if... if... ) “yeah,” Tony agrees, swallowing a lump in his throat. “Yeah. Who--- who are you?”

+ “ Hey, hey... “ Every movement now is purely on instinct, with nothing so much as a second thought spared on reaching and taking his hand into hers. “ I get it’s hard. Probably not the same way you do, but I get where you’re coming from. “

“ I know it’s not much but...you don’t have to do this alone anymore. “ She added, giving his hand a firm squeeze.

+ “ It kind of showed, tiger. “ Breathing a sigh of relief, Mary Jane took a step forward, wrapping her arms around Peter, head burrowing into his shoulder. It’s a moment where all walls are done, every bit of almost trademark snark and wit not present, but after all they had been through, it’s something that she wasn’t going to dare let slip away unfulfilled.
