Who: Open ( @taintedstarters ) Where: Seattle streets
There was a sort of electric energy coursing through the air the moment Mateo exited the Steam Room. Despite the crackling of whatever was in the air, the streets were near empty quiet. If she had thought about it longer, she would have thought to herself that it was, in fact, too quiet. But her shift had been long, and the amount of work she had to do to properly close the coffee shop had drained her of her ability to be aware of her surroundings. Now that the day was over and the exhaustion was setting in, Mateo took a second to lean her forehead against the closed shop door while she fumbled with trying to get the keys in the lock. When she finally managed the mundane task, she felt her phone ring out in the rarely used emergency alert tone. She pulled out her phone, read over the alert which advised people to stay indoors and avoid travel, and then let out a sigh. Well, that would explain why the last two hours of her shift had dragged on with absolutely no one around.
Mateo pulled back and started her walk back to her apartment. She was quite content to stay indoors, run a bath, and watch reruns of Buffys (she had to remember to ask Remy if stakes were a real thing). A cold and forceful breeze blew around her, lifting dead leaves and dust around her and Mateo stayed rooted in place with her eyes closed. Damn Seattle and their lack of adequate street cleaning. Once she felt the breeze subside momentarily, she resumed her walk, turning into a dark place of the city. Fuck, she hoped the power wasn’t out at her place, sure to throw a wrench in her plans.
Before she could dwell on it, another violent and freezing breeze blew, this time feeling like it went right through her. Mateo suddenly lost the ability to breathe in the aggressiveness of the wind though this time her eyes remained opened. It was dark and disorienting, and Mateo could have sworn the air around her was whispering. Then, just ahead, a power pole collapsed with a loud crack. Sparks flew and Matty’s eyes caught what appeared to be shadows in the middle of street. For the first time in her life, and for all the fire inside her, Mateo shivered. What the…
It was a hand wrapping around hers that pulled her out of the fearful trance she had been in mere seconds ago. “Lets go,” the person said as they pulled her into a sprint, away from whatever that had been. Mateo’s feet blindly complied, and it wasn’t until they were back in a well-lit area of the city that her lungs complied in taking air in and that the hand around hers released.
“You saw that right,” she exclaimed, leaning on her knees and a little out of breath, “I’m not crazy, you saw that too, right?”
