Elephant 2015. Xinyi Mei (梅心怡). Photography. 2018.
Xinyi Mei is an image producer who lives and works in Jiangsu and Shanghai, China. Her photographic works are usually set in artificial scenes where she ridicules the contrived harmony within domestic households rooted in the conventional family structure.
In Elephant 2015, Mei reproduces the scene of her grandmother unexpected death. Mei dramatizes the scene by setting the friends and family members as audiences of this "medical incident." The medical devices prominently featured in the series serve as a way to conceal and weaken the undercurrent of antagonism among those who are present: everyone seems to be filial, thoughtful and grieving for each other’s loss.
Originally hoped to aggressively smash the family fairy tale she built, Mei gradually realizes that it is in the process of dealing with the sudden loss of family members that family ties are reconstructed, reviewed, and reflected upon, albeit temporally. “During the process of shooting, I realized that I also had the innate tendency to look for excuses to ease the tension. It motivated me to search for other means of representation and to look back at my distress towards the conventional familial structure.”

Unsung Heroes by Lucy Liu.
One of the must-mention names when asked about inspiring Asian American role models, Lucy Liu is getting a star on Hollywood Walk of Fame on May 1. Her star will be placed next to Anna May Wong’s, who was “the first Chinese American actress to grace Hollywood’s film screens” according to Ana Martinez, producer of the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The announcement of Lucy Liu’s long-awaited star also brings attention to the female-focused scripted anthology series Lucy Liu is currently developing, Unsung Heroes. The series will be dedicated to telling the untold stories of women who overcame adversity to become pioneers of their time but did not receive acknowledgement for their achievements. The first episode, as if a nod to the upcoming Walk of Fame ceremony, will center on the silent era actress Anna May Wong.

Red Canary (红莺歌). 2017.
Red Canary is a “coalition of first and second-generation immigrants, sex workers, community workers, and allies.” They began in 2017 after Yang Song, a massage parlor worker, died in a police raid, and is currently the only grassroots Chinese massage parlor worker coalition in the United States.
With the tagline “rights not rescue”, Red Canary stands against police raids and deportation, while advocating for labour rights and respect for sex workers and migrant workers.

My New Swag (我的新衣) by VAVA (Feat. Ty. & 王倩倩). 2017.
Vava, dubbed China’s hip hop queen, is a rapper from Sichuan province. She had a turbulent childhood and dropped out of school to pursue a music career at the age of 16. She rose to fame in the first season of Rap of China, gaining recognition for her Mandarin and Sichuan dialect rap and being the only female rapper to make it to the final four. Following her breakthrough and commercial success, she is now seen as China’s new face of fashion and hip hop.
In an interview with Esquire, she states, “Hip hop comes from the US, and let’s be honest here, we’re really just copying their style, but, in a sense, we are connected. We’re still finding our way, still creating and finding our own Chinese style of hip hop. We need to put more Chinese elements into our music...”
A mesh of modern hiphop and traditional Chinese elements, My New Swag is part of the soundtrack of the 2018 record breaking film, Crazy Rich Asians. The film’s explosive success greatly contributed to Vava’s rising international exposure.
