Third Year
26/09/16
Third year has begun with a one week project to get us thinking about what we could be possibly interested in creating for our third year practical project, 6105. This major project will continue through until we finish our third year and so, we need to think about things we are interested in to carry the project through the whole year.
What am I interested in/ What is a theme in my work?
One theme that has cropped up often throughout my work is that I like to combine design with sport, and in particular I have consistently been drawn back to bicycles. This is something I am still interested in and I feel I have further avenues to work with this theme again.
One week project
As we had to decide so quickly what to do and get making straight away I decided to run with the theme throughout my work and decided to start by making my own bicycle chain. I started by creating the basic shapes and piecing them together with a small wooden dowel. I then went on to scale up the actual measurements of a chain to about 5x the size of my own bikes chain. I used the correct sized dowel and the outcome was that it started to resemble a chain much more accurately. I also tried my hand at cutting out gear cogs and assembling them into a sprocket.
Ideas for my major project
From this week long project I decided that the idea of customising or having a unique bike was appealing to me more than making functional, accurate versions of my own. I decided to look more into this and maybe think about customising a bike myself as part of my project. I will start by looking and bicycle designs that appeal to me most to gain inspiration.
