Book 38 of 2018: Weird Dinosaurs by John Pickrell

A herd of small, fuzzy dinosaurs is moving through the foliage on the swampy edge of a lake. They chirp at one another, some occasionally shaking and puffing up their plumage. Several remain alert--peering this way and that through horsetail and seed ferns, ready to hoot in alarm if danger is spotted--while enfluffed juveniles dart back and forth between the adults’ legs. It is the late Jurassic, about 160 million years before this region will be known as Siberia and renowned for its icy environment.

To the anon who asked about the book Weird Dinosaurs, I highly recommend it. It's fantastically up to date, and also goes into a lot of depth about the history of discoveries and palaeontology as a whole. It's a really great book (despite the cover) and definitely worth having a look at.

There was a segment on the radio (triple j) this morning, with John Pickell answering questions about dinosaurs and talking about his book, "Weird Dinosaurs". Everything he was saying seemed about right (i.e. birds are dinosaurs, feathers, melanosomes, etc.), but I was wondering if you know anything about the reliability of the book? I was looking into getting it, but the cover seems a bit innacurate - but I don't think I know enough to be certain. Thank you!!

Covers are often inaccurate even if the contents are bad - Just ask Darren Naish (his latest book has an... unfortunate cover). I haven’t gotten the book myself but maybe try to find a copy in a bookstore and thumb through it?
