Celebrating our Whole Selves with Wellness Week 2016
We’ve all heard the horrifying statistics that tell us our desk jobs are slowly killing us. Sitting all day is wrecking our metabolisms, and the stress from working long hours wreaks havoc on our physical and mental health. Scary, right?
Great Work Comes from Happy Employees
Luckily, Porter Novelli is a company that recognizes that its employees are people — a groundbreaking concept that many other businesses haven’t grasped — and therefore has a vested interest in our overall health and wellbeing. Programs both in and out of the office help us ensure we’re bringing our happiest, healthiest selves into the office each day.
Earlier this year, PN rolled out a corporate fitness program that provides a $300 allowance for fitness-related purchases, from classes to FitBits and more. And several offices across the network have rooms set aside where PNers can go for a quiet place to meditate. The Zen Room in Atlanta even has a massage chair you can take advantage of while you peruse the books available in our Loaning Library.
Wellness Week 2016
Also in Atlanta, we have a small group of employees dedicated to helping our colleagues stay a little healthier in all aspects while they’re in the office – the Wellness Circle. Each year, the Wellness Circle hosts Wellness Week, a five-day celebration of holistic wellness and mindfulness.
With weeklong challenges and daily activations, the fourth rendition of Wellness Week this past August promoted ways to be well in mind and body both in the workplace and outside of it.
Because no event is complete in the Atlanta office without a little healthy competition, we held an office-wide, weeklong step competition that pitted five teams of PNers against each other to see which group could collectively take the most steps throughout the week. Bonus activities like completing daily scavenger hunt challenges, going to the gym, or contributing to the Loaning Library helped earn bonus steps for each team as well. A social media contest rewarded the person who was the most active throughout the week sharing all of the #PNWellnessWeek activities on social. Take a look at this Storify to get a glimpse of the wellness fun captured across social media.
Me-Time Monday
In addition to the weeklong activations, each day centered around a specific theme. Me-Time Monday encouraged us to take the time to treat ourselves with a mimosa bar in the morning, guided meditation sessions throughout the day and back massages from a local chiropractor.
Taste & Train Tuesday
For Taste & Train Tuesday, we celebrated the importance of treating our bodies right with good nutrition AND physical activity! We tasted healthy smoothies and learned about the nutrients provided by the different options. That afternoon, one of our summer interns, who is also a personal trainer, led a group training session.
Wine Down Wednesday
Wednesdays are tough, but wine does make it easier – AND it’s heart healthy! We kicked off Wednesday’s activities with wine pops and cheese tastings before an afternoon adult coloring session to relieve stress from the day. We all channeled our inner Picasso and flexed our creative muscles!
Throwback Thursday
Back by popular demand, Throwback Thursday featured a potluck lunch of all of our favorite classic recipes like Mom used to make and a game of “Guess That PN Baby Pic.” We also played throwback games like tic-tac-toe and hangman to show off our elementary school-day skills.
Flourish Friday
We rounded out the week getting our green thumbs on and learning tips and tricks for low-key gardening, from what plants can survive best in cube-land to advice on apartment green living.
Even though Wellness Week is just one week out of the year, Porter Novelli values the importance of taking care of ourselves mentally and physically all year round. Not only do we do our best work when we feel well, but we also make better team members, friends and people. One thing the Wellness Circle tries to stress in the office is that there is no one “right” way to be well. If you’re taking care of yourself in every sense of the word, you can put your best foot forward, both professionally and personally.
And remember, it’s all about balance. Because you can have your doughnuts and do your burpees, too.
