4. Top 5 directors: 

Yasujirō Ozu - because unlike some of his contemporaries his movies aren’t as filtered through Western/American film. His films are very “strict” feeling, but they are also incredibly gentle and i love that. He also oozes with sympathy for his characters.

Stanley Kubrick - I think he was the first director that made me aware of style and how important that all was. Dude was also not scared to tackle a wide variety of genres and do a great job in almost all of them. Totally willing to push the form. 

Alfred Hitchcock - I think this guy is going places, he really knows how to put a film together.

John Carpenter - I remember my first film class telling the Professor he was my favorite and getting a smug “oh” in response, fuck that dude. 

Spielbergo - Fuck the haters. Jaws, Raiders, Jurassic Park, can’t fuck with that. It’s amazing to see someone doing what they were put on Earth to do and Spielberg is a movie making machine.

5. A favorite adapted movie:

The Shining. This is how I think adaptations work best. It is not a slave to the source material and is allowed to work better as film. Just film the novel/play/comic never works out great in my opinion.

7. A guilty pleasure

I try not to subscribe to the idea of guilty pleasures because I am truly a lover of a lot of trash cinema that a lot of people see very little worth in, but in the spirit of the question I am vocal defender of the entire Friday the 13th franchise. On the other side of the coin I am also a huge fan of Speed Racer.

10. A movie that not many have heard that you’ve seen

Bob Clark’s (A Christmas Story, Black Christmas, Porky’s) Death Dream AKA Dead of Night. I truly think this is one of the THEE best horror movies of the 70s. Very ahead of its time on its view of Vietnam, PTSD, and the effects of war.
