Just finished watching a retrospective on Wertpol and the Menagerie series and man. I saw Mark’s playthrough of Presentable Liberty when I was… 15? And I was really starting to struggle with my depression for the first time in my life. Presentable Liberty gave me a weird sort of catharsis to sort through the feelings I was having in a safe way. I know I tend to focus on the wackier and more lighthearted parts of the games (yes, these lighthearted parts exist!), but I hope that doesn’t come across as being disrespectful of Robert’s legacy. I respect him immensely as both a creator and a person. To be more frank, I miss him, as I’m sure many others do as well, not just for what he made, but for who he was.

Presentable libery aka ouch my heart

Okay so, I’m a huge fan of Presentable Liberty and Wertpolts other games. The first time I saw/played presentable liberty was when I was in a very bad place and it helped me a lot. It made me realize some things and helped to undertsand myself better. 

At the same time I started watching Markiplier, I found him because of this game and “don’t take this risk”. 

Mark is now one of my fav youtubers and almost never fails to cheer me up, at least a litte, But this post isn’t about him.

As I said, Presentable Liberty is and will always be one of my fav games, fuck, I sent a list of my favs to someone yesterday and it was the first one that came to mind. 

Just a few minutes ago my brother finished the game in a livestream. I asked him to stream it because he wanted a short but great game. 

It was the first time for me to see the game after I found out that the developer died. He killed himself.

I know, I didn’t know him, I just played his games. But it feels so.. off to know that someone who created something you love, so much, something that means a lot to you, has killed himself. 

I don’t know where I’m trying to go with this, I think I just need to put me thoughts out there, and I know that a few people will feel the same.

My heart aches and tears are still filling my eyes at this point. I really wish I could just thank Wertpol, that’s the least I could do.

To anyone reading this. Know that there are people that care about you and your work. People love your art, stories, whatever it is that you put out there. Even if you might not see it. 

To quote happy buddy : You are smart and kind and important.

I’m not sure how to feel about this so I think it would be the best to write about it. I discovered that a video game developer I looked up to took his own life seven months ago. It’s quite shocking to only find out now that he died, whilst I did not knew him personally I still feels, numb about it.

Presentable Liberty, one of his more popular indie games I know about was from my perspective brilliant, it did not need wonderful real life like graphics to tell its story and made you feel emotions.

@wertpol Robert, wherever you are right now I hope you’re doing good, you inspired many and the legacy you gave you will be passed on.

'Why on earth would you remake Exoptable Money & Presentable Liberty?'

Hello people, I'm writing this blog post in response to a question that I've been asked time and time again. If you are wondering the same thing, then please let me try to explain.

The reason I want to remake the original games is because I want Menagerie 3 to be great, and the original games, especially Exoptable Money, are in the way of that. If you think Exoptable Money is a fantastic game that should never be changed then that's your call, but I have to severely disagree with that. I made that game in 3 days. It's not well thought out at all, it doesn't raise any interesting points, and it doesn't offer anything to build off of for the rest of the series. I agree that there's not much reason for me to remake Presentable Liberty, other than for completion's sake and the fact that no one would ever fund a remake for Exoptable Money exclusively. There is also no good reason not to.

I'm making a Kickstarter because I know that the games can be better than they were, and I know I need money to make them the way I want to. Of course, once they're done, I still won't give them away for free like the originals, because I believe they will warrant their asking price. Some people seem to think that putting a price on art lessens it, but I believe that it simply shows that the creator thinks it is worth it. I've never sold anything – Exoptable Money, Presentable Liberty and Menagerie: Archive were all free, because I don't feel like they justify a price tag. I made them with the intention of putting them out there for free, and I still think they should always be free. This is not the case with the remakes, though – I would spend months of my life focusing on just them, polishing them to shit to make sure they are worth their asking price. Making games is work. I can't be expected to make free games all my life. I could do that, of course – but it would also mean that I would never be able to make the games I actually want to make now. My vision for the Menagerie series simply isn't possible to make on a budget of zero anymore, and I don't feel sorry for wanting it to be great.

Bottom line, it offends me when people tell me I'm making the series only for profit now, when it couldn't be further from the truth. I want to make better games than I have been, I want to move forward, I don't want to be stuck making these small games that I don't feel have much value forever. I don't owe that to anyone either, I think. I want to make game development my profession, and if anyone thinks that that makes me a lesser developer or person, then I seriously question how they could justify ever liking any art that they didn't receive for free.
