Catch 22 - Wes is stuck in a Catch 22 when he sees you again for the first time after you spend the night together.
One Night - Wes asks if he can stay the night while he finds a place in Budapest.
Think About It - Wes asks you to think about his offer.
Push - Wes realises he's pushed you too hard.
Broken - Wes doesn't think you're broken.
Demons - Wes has his own demons.
Night Calls - Wes always calls you at night.
Sincerity (NSFW) - Wes finally tells you how he feels.
The rooftop party is Raines idea.
Wes wants to do something special for your birthday but is at a loss because he’s been in Budapest for three months and most of that is intermittent due to his ‘work trips’. He doesn’t know the best place to celebrate something so important so he puts it to the group.
Their suggestions range wildly from the Unicorn Bistro – a firm no because you’re terrified of the fucking things after a book you read by Ben Aaronovitch to the Ice Bar, a hovel that’s both overpriced and overrated.
“Your apartment building has a rooftop garden, I’m sure the view is incredible.” Raines says and it gets Wes’s brain going because you are criminally low maintenance compared to what he’s used to. He realises he’s been thinking too big, too grand. You enjoy meaningful gestures, not money thrown at you.
“We can get some fairy lights, set up a make shift bar, order from that place she likes on the corner.” He says as he begins to outline a plan.
“She’s an 80s baby right?” Amanda says as she picks up her phone, scrolling through it. “We can use a carefully collated 90s playlist for a little nostalgia.”
“Yes.” Wes says clapping his hands together. “I like the way this is coming together.”
It’s a few weeks later that Wes lures you onto the rooftop with the promise of a cigar, it’s something the two of you used to do after you worked a case together. It had started in Riyadh when you’d taken down a global human trafficking network. Saudi Arabia’s a dry country which means you can’t have a drink to celebrate so Wes had rustled up the next best thing.
“Christ, I can’t remember the last time I had a Montecristo.” You say, his fingers laced with yours as he leads you up the stairs to the rooftop. “It’s all I’ve been able to think about since-
That’s when the cheer goes up and you’re surprised by your nearest and dearest appearing to wish you happy birthday. The way your face lights up when you lay eyes on your parents for the first time in a year, it makes all of that hard work worthwhile.
Your evening becomes a whirlwind of catching up and merriment and Wes, he likes to fade into the background sometimes, to watch. He doesn’t think he’s ever seen you as happy as you are tonight, your hair tumbling over your shoulders as you throw your head back and laugh at something your father said. It makes his heart thud harder in his chest because you deserve this for putting the light back in his life, you deserve the best that life has to offer.
“I never did get that Montecristo.” You say as orange starts to bleed into the darkness. The parties wound down and there’s just the two of you left on the roof, watching the sun rise in the distance.
Wes withdraws the cigar from his pocket and you shake your head as you slip into his lap, your thighs settling on either side of his hips.
“After.” You murmur, your nose trailing along his until your lips are barely parted. “I need to thank you for flying my parents out.”
“Oh.” He says in understanding, tucking the cigar back into his pocket before he kisses you. “After it is.”

Lake Garda is Wes’s first trip away for pleasure. His friend Justin has a small villa perched on a hill overlooking the water, one close enough to a golf club where he can get his swings in and ten minutes away from a beach so that you can spend your mornings surfing.
The best part though is the pool, the evenings the two of you spend without a stitch of clothing, playing, swimming, making love.
“Forget the bed. Let’s fuck right here.” You had said that first night as he held you in his arms, the warm water lapping over his skin. He’d made you come underneath the stars, the moonlight illuminating your bare skin before the two of you fell asleep curled up in front of a firepit.
Your days after that involve exploring castles, roaming farmer’s markets and trips across the lake in the speedboat that Wes may or may not have liberated the keys for, from Justin’s study. You eat at restaurants that overlook the twinkling lights of the harbour and drink wine older than the both of you. You take evening strolls along pristine beaches before falling asleep in sheets that cost more than your monthly rent.
Wes has never been as contented as he is in Italy which is why the fall comes a few days before you have to leave, why he starts to withdraw into himself, become more subdued.
“Are you ok?” You ask him that evening as you sit down on the bed, watching him begin to pack his suitcase for a flight that isn’t for another two days. “You’ve been a little distant today.”
“It’s stupid shit.” He tells you, focusing on jamming the stuff he doesn’t need into the bottom of the case. “Foster kid shit.”
There are certain things that no one else can ever understand about Wes, not unless they’ve been a kid in care. You learn that nothing is permanent, that everything is temporary. You become mistrustful of good things, always waiting for the other shoe to drop because it will drop, it always drops, always when you least expect it.
Logically he knows he’s control, that he’s an adult that can make his own choices, that there’s no higher power that can snatch away the life he’s made for himself but that anxiety, it lodges in his chest sometimes, it still eats at him in his weakest moments.
“Wes.” You say quietly, your hand coming to rest on his, stilling his motions. “You know you can tell me what’s going on in your head.”
He swallows hard against the ache in his throat, the one that seems to radiate through his ribcage. Before you, he used to keep this shit locked down tight. He’d work himself into the ground, drink, pull away until the whole thing blew up in his face. He doesn’t do that with you because you’re his safe space, his person and you don’t hide things like that, not when they have the potential to poison all the good in your life.
“What if I’m never this happy again?” He finds himself saying as he sits down on the bed alongside of you. “What if as soon as we leave Italy everything falls apart?”
“Wes what do you think is going to happen when we get back to Budapest?” You ask him, your palm lightly rubbing over that space between his shoulders, the one where he carries all his tension. “That I’ll suddenly decide I don’t want to be with you, that the FBI will send you back to the US?”
He looks away, his palms rubbing together in agitation and you know you’ve hit the nail right on the head.
“I have never been as happy as I am with you.” You tell him, placing a gentle kiss on his shoulder. “My life was grey before you came back into my life, I was just existing, I wasn’t really living. You brought all this colour into my world, all this fun and I wouldn’t give that up for anything. I won’t give you up for anything.”
“Toni…” He says softly, his hands running through his hair. “You can’t mean that…”
“But I do.” You say fiercely, your fingertips chasing along his jaw, guiding his gaze back to yours. “I love you Wes and that doesn’t change because we are or aren’t in Budapest. You could be anywhere in this world and I would still feel the same way I do now.”
“You love me?” He repeats, his forehead coming to rest upon yours. “Because that’s the first time you’ve said it. You need to be sure-”
“I am sure.” You promise him, your lips brushing over his. “I don’t think I’ve ever been so sure about anything in my entire life.”

One Night - Wes asks if he can stay the night while he finds a place in Budapest.
After the first night Wes spends with you in Budapest, he wakes up to the sight of you opening the curtains wearing nothing but an old Ahola t-shirt and blue panties with surf boards on.
This is the way it should have been the first time he thinks as the light filters through, warming his skin. If he’d stuck around, if he’d stayed.
“Rise and shine sleepyhead.” You announce as you traipse back to the bed to wake him. “If you’re gonna be staying here you need to earn you keep-”
Wes’s arm wraps around your waist, tumbling you onto the bed. You find yourself flat on your back, amongst the pillows, staring at the ceiling as Wes’s body drapes over yours.
“Oh Toni, I’ll earn it.” He mumbles, his lips leaving a heated trail down your throat. “You just lie back, relax and let me do it.”

PATREON EARLY ACCESS: Lake Garda - Wes Mitchell x Reader
Lake Garda is Wes’s first trip away for pleasure. His friend Justin has a small villa perched on a hill overlooking the water, one close enough to a golf club where he can get his swings in and ten minutes away from a beach so that you can spend your mornings surfing.
The best part though is the pool, the evenings the two of you spend without a stitch of clothing, playing, swimming, making love.
One Night - Wes asks if he can stay the night while he finds a place in Budapest.
Think About It - Wes asks you to think about his offer.
Push - Wes realises he's pushed you too hard.
You’re on the couch when Wes lets himself into the apartment, you’re wearing those cute little pyjama shorts, the ones he tugged off when he was going down on you the night before he left for Madrid. His t-shirt is draped over them, clinging to your form in a way that makes Wes want to strip it right off you because a week without you, it’s just too much.
He leaves his duffle bag by the door as he steps towards you. You tilt your head up to meet his gaze and he remembers the letter he left, the one that’s caused all this friction between the two of you.
“I shouldn’t have pushed you.” He says as he sits down on the couch beside you. “I’m sorry, I just… I forget that you’re not like me, that everyone’s recovery is different…”
He trails off because he can’t find the words to explain any further. The marks of his history are seared into his skin, years of bad foster parents and juvenile delinquency and the mental ones…
Well, he was seven shades of fucked up long before the FBI got it’s hooks into him.
“I should have been honest with you when you first turned up on my doorstep.” You say quietly as you angle your body towards him, your arm coming to rest on the back of the couch. “I just… I didn’t want you to think I was broken-”
“You’re not broken.” Wes asserts, his hand coming to rest on your forearm, his thumb tracing over the tattoo of a constellation etched into your skin. “A little banged up maybe.”
The edges of your mouth tip up into a grim smile and the knot in his chest loosens just a little as your gaze flickers up to meet his.
“This thing with the Fly Team, I appreciate it but I’m not ready to put myself into a position where I can experience something like that again.” You tell him, your fingers entwining with his. “Seeing those girls chained up like that, starved to death in that storage container, it eviscerated me and I’m not in a place where I can jump back in just yet. I don’t know if I ever will be and I’m sorry if that disappoints you-”
“Antonia,” Wes interrupts you, his grip on your hand tightening. “There is no way on this earth that you could ever disappoint me. If you need time, take the time, if you need space, I’m happy to give you as much or as little as you need. If me being here is stressing you out, you just need to say the word and I’m gone. You just tell me what you want me to do and I will do it.”
“And if I want you to stay?” You ask him.
“Then I’ll stay.” He tells you, his lips brushing over the underside of your wrist. “I’ll stay for as long as you’ll have me.”

Wes shouldn’t have left the letter, he realises that as he sits at a table in a club called The Full Moon in Madrid, sipping a coke and surveilling their suspect. The idiot has been dancing with a blonde for the past hour and it’s starting to get pornographic. So much so that even Wes is averting his gaze because his idea of a fun night is not watching a drug dealer fingerfuck a stranger on the dancefloor.
He turns his attention back to his phone, to the message you’d text him earlier today.
Sorry Wes, I think it’s time for you to start looking for your own place.
He pushed you too hard, he thinks, trying to get you on board with the flight team. And this is you pushing back. You think he doesn’t know the extent of your psychological issues but you have no idea how deeply familiar he is with PTSD, the insidiousness of it. He went through 12 foster homes before he found his forever family, he was seven shades of fucked up long before he hit 18.
The thing is you’re a phenomenal investigator, one of the best he’s worked with. The way you work with victims, it’s almost an art form. You have an appreciation for people, a deep emotional intelligence that you just can’t teach back at the academy and Wes wants that on his team. He wants you to be out in the world using your superpower for good.
And that’s the problem, he’s been thinking about his needs and not about yours. He didn’t consider the fact you might not be ready yet, that you’re still coming to terms with what was the most harrowing case of your career. It’s the reason you left the US, why you took up a teaching position at the International Training Academy.
Recovery takes time, his adopted father had told him one night as they sat together drinking chocolate milk. It was something they always did when Wes woke up from the nightmares. A way of turning something negative into a positive. Everyone has to go at their own pace, you can’t force it.
He needs to remember that in the future, that just because he can’t see the struggle doesn’t mean that it’s not going on.
His fingertips hover over the keys. It’s hard for him to find the right words for what he wants to say because this should be an actual conversation, not an exchange of messages through the ether.
I pushed you, he responds, and I’m sorry for that. I should have been more respectful of your boundaries. If you still want me to move out by the time I get back, consider it done.
He sees the three dots appear and then disappear, then reappear before the message comes through.
We’ll talk when you get back.

It’s a traditional Hungarian Zserbo from the bakery a few streets away from your apartment. It’s one of you favourites. Something Wes knows because you’ve eaten there together every morning for the past couple of weeks.
Underneath the cupcake is a note that simply reads.
Think about it...
You sigh, your fingertips tracing over his handwriting. He’d asked you last night to join the flight team, make the switch from teaching back into field work. You’ve been an instructor at the International Law Enforcement Academy for over a year now and haven’t had so much as a thought about a change in career until Wes offered up the position. Now it’s all you can think about.
The problem is you don’t know if you have the stomach for it anymore.
That last case you worked, it had fucked you up in ways you’re still trying to untangle to this very day. Wes may have read the file, flicked through the psych eval but he doesn’t understand the reality of it, what seeing ten young girls, starved to death in a storage container does to you. He doesn’t know that you’ve been in therapy since it happened, trying to combat PTSD because sometimes you see their faces in your dreams.
“You’re in an excellent investigator, you know it and I know it.” He’d said over a couple of beers, when he’d met you after your final class. “It’s time to step off the bench and get back in the game.”
You’d almost said yes but then you remembered that this is what Wes does, he comes into your life, throws everything up in the air and then he leaves. It’s been that way the entire time you’ve known him. The two of you may be close now but it won’t last, not when he realises just how broken you are. It’s best to nip it in the bud before it gets any more complicated than it already is.
You pull out your phone before pulling up your message thread. Your fingertips swiping over the keys as you type out your text.
Sorry Wes, I think it’s time for you to start looking for your own place.

All it takes is a touch, the soft caress of Wes’s hand against yours as he leans in the doorway of your apartment in Budapest and you’re back on that beach in LA, his fingertips skating over the waistband of your bikini, lightly pulling at the ties. You remember his mouth ghosting over your skin, the stubble that lines his jaw leaving marks on your inner thighs that were still there a week later when he got back together with Ella.
“You’re not staying at my place.” You warn him, your arm across the space, barring him from entry. There’s a duffle bag by his feet, no doubt packed full of his essentials. “We were one and done back in LA.”
“It wasn’t really one though was it?” He reminds you, crossing his arms over his chest. “It was more like three…”
“I think you are greatly overestimating your abilities.” You inform him despite the fact you both know it was more like five.
The beach, to his Jeep, to your bed.
You’d woken up the next morning, him gone, your surf board cleaned down and resting neatly against the wall in your hallway. There had been no follow up after that except from a few late night texts from Ella telling you to stay away from her man.
“One night on the couch, I cook.” He barters, using his boot to prod the groceries he’s already bought out of sight. “I really don’t have nowhere else to go.”
There are hotels, hostels, even an Air BnB that may charge him a decent rate but he came to you, you know why too. Wes, he craves a taste of home. Someone who knows him in a city where he’s stranger, someone who can steady him amongst the upheaval and displacement he feels over Brooks’s death.
“One night.” You concede, stepping away from the door and gesturing for him to some inside. “And you stay on the couch.”
But it’s not just one night and Wes, he certainly does not end up sleeping on that couch.
