On Jan. 1, 2019, Dunkin’ Donuts, which grew at midcentury from a mom-and-pop shop in Quincy, Massachusetts, will officially drop the word “donuts” from its famous brand name after 68 years. Some 100 miles west, in West Springfield, Massachusetts, is Donut Dip. Opened in 1957, this other “DD” — still a mom and pop, with only one other location — remains much like it was 61 years ago, a family business that fully embraces its donut heritage. They are made on site. They are made with love. They are so good. And the people there are so nice. After I came in from the bitter cold, having spent about 10 minutes shooting pictures outside, they made me feel right at home. Much of the conversation involved me gushing about the neon sign, and thanking them for preserving it. But this place is a vintage delight inside, too — slide to look at some of the wonderful signs behind the counter.
