As if Cherry needed to be more Lemony Snicket, here is Lamer House in 1951.
He had sold it in 1947 and moved to London, so this probably doesn’t have terribly much to do with him, alas for the narrative possibilities. I’m inclined to think it a suspicious fire in the Vancouver sense – it was an old house that was expensive to maintain and starting to crumble, so a convenient tragic fire that necessitates a rebuild is pretty much par for the course.
What I was looking for was George Bernard Shaw’s photo of Lamer still standing, because his photo has a bare brick frontage while the photo in Sara Wheeler’s book is inconclusive, but the LSE have tidied away their digitised Shaw photo collection. Just another day chasing history on the internet ...

“What do you do when you have a photo exhibition coming up and want it to be a great success? You, of course, ask Martin Gore to sit for you and take some portrait photos! Well, not exactly. It was actually Daryl, the Band’s former personal assistant, who helped me set up a quick photo session at Martin’s family home back in 1995 but the photos also ended up being used in several issues of BONG magazine. On the day of the shoot, Martin was a real pro and happy to play along, while wearing my sunglasses to protect him from the strong sunshine and chasing his two dogs. Later on that year, I won the first prize for my photo exhibition, so you can say the mission was successfully accomplished!”
