#44: a random fact about anything
okay nerd reference time hehe
“When a lioness has children, she stops making love to the lion. The lion gets jealous—sometimes so jealous he eats the children. You'd think this would upset the lioness. Far from it. They make love again like the children never existed. I find that idea terrifying.”
that’s your fun fact of the day hehe
(putting a cut for my actual fact bc it’s long but please read it it’s actually valuable information)
in all seriousness, my fact that i’m currently obsessing over is the fact that teenagers biologically cannot get enough sleep per night. imagine a child who’s 12 years old. this child likes to go to bed at 9:30. when you become a preteen into a teenager (around ages 12-19) your sleep schedule naturally moves back 12-18 minutes per year. when this child is fourteen, assuming an average of 15 minutes per year, it’s now 10:00 before they can go to sleep. moving this on and on until age 18, it’s now 11:00. most clocks are a lot further back than this one, so most teens go to bed even later than this. this may not sound so big, but adolescents need 9-10 hours of sleep per night to properly function, so by that math, teens staying up until 10:00 every night should wake up at 8:00 in the morning. but schools start much earlier (my school day starts at 7:35 and the recommended drop off time is 7:15!) than this. taking myself as an example, let’s say i go to bed on average about 11:00. i have to wake up at 6:15 in the morning every day, due to transportation issues and time to get ready. using this math, i get 7 hours and 15 minutes of sleep per night, 1:45-2:45 below the recommended amount of sleep. so kids aren’t lazy, they physically cannot get up this early without burning out and having permanent affects on their mental health, physical health, and academic performance. they can’t just go to bed earlier, because the body is naturally wired this way.
