(( popping back in from vacation with a long-held sansycanon, since i can’t remember if i posted this and my nerd buddy @donkinbronut posted something similar recently that he said was inspired partially by this (i think).
the voice sansy uses isn’t his own. he has no idea who it belongs to, having had more or less the same voice since he was young, but it’s a magical mimicry of some voice or other, or perhaps a combination of several. it’s not something he consciously designs, but he doesn’t really mind it. he could probably tweak it if he really concentrated.
sansy has no natural (that is to say, non-magical) way of making words. his base sound that he can make with no magic effort consists of purring, low, clattering growls, and a kind of dolphinlike clickclickclickclick. notably, the blasters he keeps make the same array of sounds.
he finds growling and clicking deeply embarrassing-- they’re a definite symbol of his own lack of control. he used to hate his purring, too, but the support of his friends and family got him past that after a while.
none of the sounds that sansy makes, magical or otherwise, require him to open his mouth. sometimes he moves his mouth when he speaks for the sake of other peoples’ comfort, but that can end up being creepier than not; the sounds he makes and the motions of his face have a slight lag between them, with the words coming the tiniest bit earlier than the motion.
he’s also pretty decent at magically copying most sounds. he tends not to do this except in particularly safe company-- it feels to him like it’s exposing the false-ness of his speaking voice. ))
