Statue by Audrey Flack, of Catherine of Braganza. Now standing in Lisbon, this was the model for a proposed 35-foot statue in Queens, NY, which is believed to have been named for Catherine. A group of Portuguese-American began raising money for the sculpture in 1983, but the project was derailed by protests that, among other things, “a British monarch was an inappropriate subject for a public monument.”

When I was nine or ten I won a poetry writing contest sponsored by my local library. It was inspired by Anne of Green Gables. That was my first real attempt at writing.

And then I tried writing a short story for my seventh grade English class and my teacher told me she didn’t know what the words I was using meant.

So there was that.
