The night was late and the sands empty, the silence so complete and all consuming that any noise which pierced it seemed to echo in comparison. Head bowed over the table, Owen's weight propped on the smooth surface through his arms as he listened to the sound of Beru's footsteps drawing closer. There was a scratch on the tabletop he picked at with a finger, making a vow to see it fixed before it grew worse.
"Is he back asleep?" There was a tiredness that was more than physical marking Owen's face when he looked up at Beru, something that showed it wasn't just Luke's lately sleepless nights that was bothering him. Following that attack, he couldn't blame the kid for having nightmares, didn't blame the kid if sometimes he refused to settle for anyone but Beru.
He didn't even blame Ben, who showed up at the end, or the woman that caused the nightmares after she carried Luke back, choosing not to hurt him. She'd once stood with a glowing blade of red against Owen's neck, talking about what he was willing to do for his family, and then brought his family back.
So if he didn't blame Beru and didn't blame Luke, didn't blame Ben or the former Inquisitor, then who was left to hold responsible for the seething mass of worry settling inside Owen's chest?
