                        a  pause  .    for  once  the  harlequin  does  not  rush  to  respond    ,    words  spilling  ‘fore  her  mind  has  time  to  catch  up  .    instead    ,      she  takes  a  moment  to  consider  @wightwyntr​‘s  words  more  carefully    ,    display  of  hesitation  working  onto  her  features  as  her  lips  curve  down  into  a  faint  frown  .    were  it  somebody  else    ,    perhaps  she  would  attempt  to  introduce  a  note  of  levity  to  the  conversation    ,    brushing  it  off  with  a  flippant  remark  .          but  it’s  not  somebody  else    ,    it’s  him    ,    and  the  way  that  he  says  it  so  softly  pulls  at  harley’s  heartstrings  .    they  both  know  what  normal  means        —        it  means  life  before  .    before  the  trauma    ,    before  the  loss  of  autonomy      .  .  .      before  it  all  .                              

                        they’re  side  by  side  on  her  couch        —        her  legs  tucked  under  her  body    ,    his  body  twisted  slightly  away  from  her  to  better  accommodate  her  request  to  play  with  his  hair  .    even  as  she  thinks    ,    gentle  caresses  do  not  cease    ,    digits  carding  through  dark  locks  in  a  steady  rhythm  .    finally    ,    she  shrugs  .                        ❝            eh  .    who’s  t’  say  what’s  normal  anyway  ?    it’s  subjective  .              ❞                            

                        it’s  an  attempt  to  reassure  him  without  sugarcoating  it  .      (      what  would  be  the  point  in  lying  when  they  both  know  the  truth  ?      )        —        her  hand  drops    ,    sliding  down  from  the  back  of  his  skull  to  sit  at  the  spot  where  the  base  of  his  neck  meets  his  shoulder    ,    and  she’ll  lean  forward  to  plant  a  quick  kiss  ‘pon  his  cheek  .                        ❝            and  fer  the  record  ?    .  .  .    i  like  ya  just  fine  ‘xactly  how  ya  are  .              ❞
