But Malkin is still the heartbeat.

...The Penguins are always good because Crosby, their leader and best player, is always great. His consistency drives them now as it did when he drove hard to the net to score that first NHL goal at the old Civic Arena in October 2005.

Wasn’t until Malkin’s debut the next season that the Penguins as the hockey world has known them were born. He scored a goal in each of his first seven NHL games. He was a wild stallion to complement the horsepower provided by Crosby’s finely-tuned engine. They complemented each other perfectly from Day 1.

They still do.

...Indisputable, though, is the jolt Malkin’s return in the second period provided the Penguins.

Well, one of the benefits of attending the game and covering it from the Mike Lange Media Level is being able to look down upon the benches. From the moment Malkin returned to it to that point he took the ice for a test skate, teammates kept sneaking peeks at him.

And the teammate that seemed most interested: Crosby.

“It was a big boost to see Geno come back,” Crosby said. “It was a tight game. There wasn’t a lot of room. We were fighting for every inch and it just didn’t seem to be one of our better games.

“Then to see Geno go down … and for whatever reason, it just seemed like we were chasing the game a bit.

“Just to see Geno come back was huge. And I think our mindset on that power play was just to get some momentum.”

she may be the love of his life, but that end can put a stud out of commission permanently if she’s not interested.

And sometimes DAD is required to rescue erring daughters from deep water.

Wild stallions are remarkable.
