They were speaking, grouped about in the front of the outdoor classroom that had been set up because the indoor one was in use. It had been the garrison yesterday. Today it was the scouts. Annie didn't rightly care; she knew where she was headed, that was all she needed to know. None of this "career day" sort of educational nonsense.
She stood alone on the outskirts of the group, turned away and leaning on a rock, absently half-listening while flicking the thorn in and out of her ring. She wasn't worried about cutting herself - nothing would happen with no clear objective in mind, and it would heal quick enough that nobody would notice anyway.
A breeze settled over them. It was too cold to be outside for these people, she thought. But Annie did not shiver.
