My second volume of the 2023 WITCH reboot arrived yesterday!!!
In March, we had the announcement of the graphic novel's publication in Brazil. The first WITCH publication in the country in 15 years, and the first Latin American country to receive this edition.
The Brazilian publisher has also emphasized that this is a limited series in 2 volumes. So, yes folks, the story ends here and there won't be a volume 3.
Volume 2 shows great improvement in the art as a whole. The characters are more expressive, and we have more creative panels and visual gags that further highlight the inspiration from Japanese manga. The colors look beautiful in this volume.
Having the physical copy in hand makes the experience much better than only being able to follow leaks and spoilers from third parties.I haven't been able to read it all yet, but I already found it quite funny, and the girls have a nice character development in some parts. - Cornelia loves writing here and wants to dedicate herself to poetry. The spirit of Cecília Meirelles watches over this girl. - I like that we have a new world, Pantos. And the villain is beautiful, she has great style.
It retains its main problems, such as cramming the plot of an entire arc into 100 pages, which doesn't help. And I still don't like how Taranee and Hay are treated in this new version.I was sad that they cut the girls' personal bows, Hay already went to China.Irma is more in sync with the element... I wish I could have seen all this development gradually.
Arthur is a character with a not-so-great design... But as a character, his story is interesting. He keeps provoking them, he has his goals and doesn't mind confronting the girls to achieve them, but he changes his mind because he disagrees with Charu and wants to leave the girls under the Empress's control. I'd venture to say he might be one of the most interesting male characters in WITCH as a whole. Much more than Caleb
Verdict: 6/10
It's a much more positive experience that people have made it possible.I don't condone the stereotypes that have been placed on Hay Lin and Taranee. And running an entire arc in one issue isn't very advantageous. But the story is light and fun. Not adhering to a pre-established canon and attempting to grow independently is a positive trait that many disagree with. I think Witch should present itself as a cheerful and hopeful place for the future. We need more of that in these difficult times.
