Willful Creatures is a short fiction story which contains 15 different stories. In this book, these stories seem to come from all over the imagination of people. To cite a few, there are stories that talk about a pumpkin-headed family, a miniature man as a pet and many more. It it seems to be very weird but they all target to send out a sad truth. This collection overall aims to teach people sad truths and hard lessons in life that will not spark joy in your life but open your eyes to the reality that usually gets blinded from the normal person. What this means is that this collection can be done to teach people and open their eyes to the reality.

The imagery and symbolisms are very rich in this collection because the author was able to express a simple truth through stories that seem to be unimaginable. With these unique ideas, not only do they keep the readers entertained, but they also surprise their readers with a lesson that lets the reader see the story in a whole new perspective. This is an example of 21st century literature because it’s unique approach to the audience is eye-catching. In this time where people are now driven to solve problems or issues whether it be personal or social, this collection of stories is significantly relevant because it exposes the people to the sad truths and allows them to accept the fact that it exists. To add to this, this is significant in this century because it expresses the author’s take on these issues. With the use of multiple short stories to prove a bigger point, it defies the classic and traditional way of literature, which is to be straightforward and  hefty with the use of only one story to drive a point.

I have had this book - "Willful Creatures" by Aimee Bender http://amzn.to/2nYcKKW - since I worked at Barnes & Noble. It had been over a decade now since I got this book, a bound galley. I had never opened it. I took it from one of the stacks made available to use as booksellers because I liked the cover. I opened it for the first time last week, on one of my moving breaks. And read the first short story, and I wept. I read the second short story today, and am not weeping because I am in an automotive waiting room, and think they would not understand. I am full of feelings. I will open the book next week, perhaps, to read the next one. If I do not keep this book forever, it is only because I will insist upon more people reading it. "He stepped closer. For some reason his hands were shaking. Using his finger as a pointer, he drew an invisible line around her. He said, "Listen. Look. Desire is a house. Desire needs closed space. Desire runs out of doors or windows or slats or pinpricks, it can't fit under the sky, too large. Close the doors. Close the windows. As soon as you laugh from nerves or make a joke or say something just to say something or get all involved with the bushes, then you blow open a window in your house of desire and it can't heat up as well. Cold draft comes in" "Don't smile" "And the smile, like a wave at the beach, receded. And when she didn't smile, when the windows stayed shut, the glass bending out to the night but not breaking, the glass curved from the press of release but not breaking, then the tension went somewhere else, something buckled inside her and made the longing bigger, tripled it, heavied it, made it so big the whole house grew thick and murky
