Daylight's End

The stupid flies faster than the bullets in William Kaufman’s post-apocalyptic action film DAYLIGHT’S END (2016, Peacock, Prime, Tubi). Kaufman knows how to shoot action, so as long as people are shooting at each other, the film is entertaining. But when they start talking, you may want to step out and look for a better movie.

Some undisclosed biological event has turned people into a cross between zombies and vampires (zompires? vampies?) that can’t abide sunlight and run around after dark sucking the blood of the non-infected. Rourke (Johnny Strong) is dedicated to destroying them. He takes a break to rescue Sam (Chelsea Edmundson) from non-infected rapists and drive her to her community in Dallas. There, a group of former cops, criminals and what have you are under siege by nasties lead by an alpha (Krzystof Soszynski) who’s organized them to take out the survivors. Strong comes up with the bright idea of breaking into the monsters’ nest by day and taking out Soszynski. Can he make it so? Does anyone care?

The plot and dialog don’t make a lot of sense. When Rourke shows up after having rescued Sam, one of the former cops just assumes he killed his brother, who was part of her scouting party, and nobody thinks to correct him. Then the same man decides to accompany Rourke on his mission, which also makes no sense. They want to plant explosives near the exits in the room where the vampies are sleeping, so one member of the party walks through the sleeping horde, even though the master shot makes it clear he could just as easily walk around them. And he walks to the exit by a large black doorway when he could have stayed closer to the light. You know this isn’t going to go well. But then, the filmmakers keep forgetting the creatures can’t survive in light, so they keep running through lighted areas to get to their prey.

Strong is the kind of actor who manages to deliver lines while barely moving his jaw. At least he makes up for it with a gratuitous, rather impressive sunbathing scene early on. In fact, it seems he takes out a small nest simply so he can go to the roof of the building and take his shirt off. The film’s only saving grace is Lance Henriksen as leader of the police group, so you get an actor with some gravitas and talent. But he doesn’t go along with Rourke’s plan (smart man), so he’s off-screen for way too long. It’s enough to make you root for the zompires.
