How did you do this /post/29735807568/this-took-me-forever-to-do-haha-h
photoshop and a LOT of patience!
okay first you need to know how to make a gif [skip this paragraph if you already know how], and you can find a ton of tutorials on that from youtube! always remember that the size limit is 1mb but tumblr is sometimes silly so just try uploading it multiple times or do a third party image uploader like tinypic and then upload it by using a url. also, to download the video, you can either just type in "youtube to [insert file type here]" on youtube, or use a screen recorder like this one if it isn't a youtube video/you only want a small part of the video (although you can easily shorten the size when making the video layers to frames), it's free but the quality isn't perfect. I would suggest making a few gifs before doing the next part just so you know you got the hang of it.
okay now for the fun part! "3d photoset!"
the first thing you need to do is make the file of the gif as large as tumblr photoset dimensions, in this case, for 3 photosets! this blog is your best friend for all photoset deminsion templates, but for now, you're just going to be using this:
what I did was I copied and pasted that into the photoshop file with the gif (video to frames) file already in it, then resized it to that that whole picture would fit. now if your youtube video size was a decent size, you might be able to do image>image size for this, and it might stretch just a little but not too much. however if your gif is small this will be more difficult, and you'll have to do image>canvas size. I would try both options, but I highly suggest doing image>image size if possible. becauseee, if you do image>canvas size, you're going to get empty space, and you'll have to recreate part of the background! for my image, it was a cartoon that i easily could manipulate to make it seem that the background was still consistant. if you look at it objectively you can see i got lazy ahah:
so yeah, the choice is yours, either extend the background yourself, or make the image bigger.
next, use the photoset dimensions guideline i gave earlier, and take out everything from that except for the white lines. after this, there are two options. the hard way, and the, uh, hard but sloppy way. this was my first time of ever making something like this so i did the hard but sloppy way!
get out the magic wand tool and highlight all of the white lines of the dimensions layer. now go to the start of the gif: if there is any part where you want to have the "3d" effect, make that part de-selected. I did this by using the lasso tool and i believe you hold down ctrl and it'll have a little (-) minus sign next to the lasso, yeah, take out whatever part needed for the thing you want 3d that is inside of the selection area. when you're done this, make sure that frame is still selected and erase the entire selection.
(ex: when there was nothing i erased all the selection [LOOK AT THE SELECTION AREA]:
when there was stuff to keep:
and repeat. for every single frame.
the second option, which i do NOT recommend, i don't think it's any easier and it's sloppier, but what I did, was i copied the layer with the white lines for every frame. so i mean, i went from i think 30-40 layers to 60-80. then i edited each frame so it could get the 3d effect. this is sloppy because it also makes it that it isn't transparent, just white inbetween. oh well!!!!
this will take at the LEAST an hour but most likely multiple hours...the longer the gif, the more frames you're going to have to edit like this.
what i did was i watched the entire first half of The Two Towers extended edition while making it...and it took the entire time...and that gif was only i belive, maybe 40 or so frames? anyway yeah it's very time consuming but looks AWESOME! so good luck!!
