Piala Dunia 1982 Spanyol. Skotlandia menggempur pertahanan Uni Soviet sampai hampir setengah lapang demi memburu gol kemenangan di 10 menit sisa waktu pertandingan. Saat mereka sedang asyik menyerang, Uni Soviet kemudian melancarkan serangan balik dengan membuang bola jauh ke depan yang langsung dikejar oleh penyerang Ramaz Shengelia. Di barisan belakang Skotlandia hanya menyisakan kiper Alan Rough serta dua bek, Alan Hansen dan Willie Miller, yang sama-sama ikut mengejar bola tersebut dari arah yang berlawanan. Karena saking semangatnya, Hansen dan Miller malah bertubrukan di dekat garis tengah lapangan yang membuat keduanya terjatuh di atas rumput. Alhasil Shengelia lepas dari pengawalan, ia  pun menggiring bola seorang diri menuju area kotak penalti lalu mencetak gol dengan bebas ke gawang Rough. "Itu seperti gol bunuh diri. Kau tidak boleh melakukan hal seperti itu," ujar gelandang John Wark mengomentari insiden tabrakan kedua rekannya itu. Pertandingan berakhir imbang 2-2 dan Skotlandia harus tereliminasi di babak penyisihan grup karena kalah selisih gol dari Uni Soviet. Blunder fatal Hansen & Miller menambah daftar kegagalan Skotlandia di Piala Dunia yang tidak pernah mampu lolos dari fase grup.
