What Do Wireless Door/Window Sensors Mean
The wireless door/window sensor is the subject of the first article in our instructional series, which focuses on one particular element of a well-designed home security system. We'll test all the popular sensor throughout the following weeks and months.
Starting with Windows and Doors
Almost all monitored home alarm systems begin with a door or window sensor. In fact, in my almost 25 years working in the alarm industry, I've never encountered a system without one! Over 100 million of these devices are in operation, with over a million new ones being installed every year, only in US homes.
Defining the Door/Window Sensor
We'll keep this straightforward and limit our discussion to doors for the time being because the sensor functioning is identical for doors and windows. The typical door sensor is a magnetic reed switch that consists of two tiny parts. The larger part is mounted on the door itself, and the smaller part is mounted on the side of the door that is not hinged. When the door is closed, the two parts are placed within an inch of one another.
What it Does
The sensor is not "active" in this closed state, allowing your alarm system to be armed. The alarm system receives a signal when the door opens and the components are split apart. The door opening will trigger an alarm signal that is sent to the monitoring center if the system was armed and was not quickly disarmed.
It's Easy and Powerful
Despite how simple these sensors are, they are amazingly efficient and simple to install. Once more, the majority of door/window sensors used today are wireless, so there is no need for unsightly wiring, and the best wireless ones are no bigger than your thumb.
Qualities You'll Like
This is just one of the numerous sensors we'll cover in this series in an effort to provide you with knowledge about home security. After you understand all your system is capable of, we'll even talk about how to construct the best solutions for your house and way of life. When you have a better understanding of how these systems operate and what you require, you will be more confident when shopping for home security and evaluating providers and deals.
