Regram via @afinewshq. This was taken at ABC NO RIO in NYC, Summer of 1995 during the first tour for ATASF. Photo by Steve Z, who was out t-shirt guy on the tour. If my memory serves me correctly, Steve also coined the term "No Dave Party" on this tour. It was on this tour that we met and became good friends with the guys in Heckle (as seen on the matching tees). When we got back to the East Bay at the end of the tour (the last week of which had to be cancelled because of so many shows being called off for various reasons) we convinced Wingnut Records to sign Heckle for an album and agreed to a split 7" release with them to promote their upcoming album if the deal went through. The label used this photo, without our consent, as a publicity photo for us based solely on the fact that the Heckle name was prominently displayed on our shirts. Repost of this photo of one of the basses I used in the '90s on most of the AFI records, including Dork, Fly In The Ointment and Answer That And Stay Fashionable. I've had a few people asking about this one. The one pictured is actually the second one of its kind, and was used on Very Proud Of Ya. Same model as the other one, but this one had an active preamp/booster inside. Matt Freeman used to give me a hard time about these basses, but all in good-natured fun. They were set up with really low action and fitted with guitar pickups, rather than bass pickups, both of which gave them a pretty distinctive sound and a different tonality than other basses.
