The long awaited (but probably forgotten) post about wingspace I promised ages ago!
I have an extrasensory/otherlimb/extralimbs/etc. tail and set of wings. They are situated on my back as shows:
The tail is placed a little oddly but I'm not very good with anatomy, so I apologize.
There's an area of interference where they are. It just feels wrong when someone or something's in that area.
This already causes a few problems:
Clothing: It's kind of hard to avoid nonphysical wings with physical clothing. In fact, I'd have to wear a backless shirt with no bra to do that which is not everyday attire. I'm AFAB and self conscious about my body so walking around with no shirt (however legal it is where I live) is out.
Backpacks: They're worn on the back. lol. I actually use messenger bags instead to help with this, but I can't do this all the time.
Chairs, beds, etc.: With a back, interference. Without, back problems flare. I can't win. And I lie down in bed when I'm on my laptop because I'm more comfortable there, but there's no perfect way to sit/lie/recline/etc.
Now, you could be going "wweh wweh shut up so you get irritated by things near your back whatever what does it matter"
This extends to living beings as well.
I literally cannot stand someone being in a "wingzone" that I don't want them in. Of course, if I say something, I'll look strange or rude. But I get noticeably more irritated the longer they're there, and will try to move so that they aren't in the wrong wingzone. This can even be fixed by a simple turn, so that they aren't in any wingzones, since my personal space bubble is smaller in front.
And at this point there may be questions related to "Why aren't you just talking about personal space bubbles, why the separate terms for these aren't they the same or whatever"
To be honest, yes, this is about personal space. But it is easier to define in terms that separate my front half bubble from the wingspace behind me. They are completely different sizes and work a little different for me. My bubble really only has one layer, maybe two. And they're pretty close to me, since close proximity in the front really doesn't bother me. It's the back half that causes problems with that interference feeling.
Pictures aren't drawn to scale because I'm bad at arting. They're close enough, though.
I don't like beings I don't like in wingzone 3 and lower. They are beings I don't want near me even in front, so they're allowed to walk behind me in 4. It's pretty hard to be one of those beings, though, so there's not a lot in that category.
Beings I barely know/that haven't done anything to me I'm okay with being in 3 or 4, but not any closer than that. If you're not sure, 3 is the area behind me that I'm okay with having someone there. It's usually a space a hand or so longer than a full arm's length away.
That being said, there are times where I don't want anyone closer than 3-4. There are some days where I only want a select few in 2 or 1. That doesn't mean I don't like you, it doesn't mean I hate everyone, I just have days where 2 and 1 are really close for me and it wigs me out more than usual.
2 is for friends, and relatives I know well. Beings I trust more than I trust most, or ones I feel comfortable around.
1 is for the best of friends (moirails would be the best description) and for significant others. Otherwise, I don't like beings in 1 at all. 1 is really close and would feel awkward for most I would assume, so for me it's not only awkward but interference glub.
I use the terms "wingspace" and "wingzone" to describe this, but that doesn't mean it can't be adapted for other beings! I use "wing" because I feel like my wings are the major factor in this. But if it weren't my wings, it'd be my tail (tailspace, tailzones)! And maybe you don't have a 'space or a 'zone, that's okay, too.
I hope this made sense! o.=.o
