Interview with wakinguptired
We got with wakinguptired who wonBest Description for her story Stars In Your Eyes for the 1D Shadow Awards Summer Edition 2016 to ask some questions!
1. Can you tell us a little about Stars In Your Eyes? Something we can’t find out just by reading the summary?
Answer: Stars is told completely in Niall’s point of view, which is something that I’ve never tried to do in a story before.
2. Writing description can be tough on any writer, even the best, how do you make sure the description you’ve given is enough?
Answer: I try not to think too hard about it.
3. What scene that you’ve written has stood out the most to you?
Answer: To be honest, I write and forget. Typically when writing a new chapter of anything, I have to go back and reread what I’ve already written. But I do have some scenes from later, unposted chapters of Stars that I like quite a bit.
4. Gwen is a dancer. Are you a dancer, as well, or did you have to research for this story?
Answer: I am not a dancer and I hate research. I get around that by not being too specific.
5. What do you love most about Stars In Your Eyes?
Answer: I love that the chapters are short and, if I were less busy, there’d be a quick turnaround. I like writing in Niall’s point of view because it’s different and it’s turned Gwen into a bit of a mystery.
6. Where can readers discover more about you?
Answer: On my tumblr, I guess? I’m haven’t been around too much lately, though, unfortunately.

Interview with purple floyd
We got with purple floyd who won Favorite OFC and Favorite Friendship for her story A League of Their Own for the 1D Shadow Awards Summer Edition 2016 to ask some questions!
1. Annie won as favorite OFC. What about her makes her so favorable?
Answer: Annie is…..incredibly dedicated. She’s fiercely loyal to the things/people she cares about, and I guess that’s what makes her admirable. For me, personally, it’s Annie’s selflessness that makes her a fun character to write. She works so incredibly hard and is so good at what she does that it almost motivates me to live the way she does. I guess she’s unafraid, in that sense? She’s made a lot of sacrifices but she sees that it’s actually making her go somewhere, so there’s that reassurance that what she’s doing isn’t going to waste. But I definitely think it’s her strong will that draws readers in.
2. What are Annie’s strengths and weaknesses?
Answer: Annie’s strengths are, like I said before, being incredibly invested in everyone and everything in her life. She doesn’t like to do things halfway, and in her field it’s important to be able to perform up to a certain standard every single day. She’s a healthcare provider, so being able to think on her feet and know what’s best for a person is definitely something she prides herself on. Weaknesses…. probably that she often forgets about herself in the grand scheme of things. I think at some point in our lives we all get so caught up in worldly endeavors that it becomes difficult to take a step back and just breathe. She rarely breathes, and that kind of comes back to kick her in the butt every once in a while.
3. Annie and Niall won favorite friendship. Can you tell us a little about their friendship?
Answer: Annie and Niall have a pretty interesting dynamic. They’ve been really fun to write together because I get to explore a side of Annie that’s a little less worked up, and it’s fun to see Niall in his element as the ‘doting big brother.’ I think one of the reasons they became really fast friends is because Niall in unabashed in his actions and I think Annie just kind of…latched on to that sense of carefreeness toward the world because she’s never really experienced that before.
4. What about Annie and Niall brings out the best in each other?
Answer: They play off each other in a lot of ways. It didn’t take very long for Niall to figure out how much he could push Annie (I think we all saw that) and Annie also managed to discover the things that Niall really cares about. They have a very mutualistic relationship—I don’t think there’s much that they complain about each other.
5. When writing a story do you outline the whole story beforehand?
Answer: So… I’ve been writing ALOTO for about two years now (I KNOW….TWO YEARS) and it’s been a little bit of both. I had the bare bones of the story outlined and started filling in by writing bits and pieces, but for the most part I plan a bit and then write what comes to me!
6. Where can readers discover more about you?
Answer: My ask box is always open if people are curious about me!

Interview with stylesreject
We got with stylesreject who won Best Harry, Best Au, Most Realistic, Most Unique, Favorite Couple, Best One Shot, Best Mini Fic, Best Romance, Best Drama, and Favorite Sidekick for her stories; Bring It Back, Come and Fade Me, in a parallel universe, and Room 93 for the 1D Shadow Awards Summer Edition 2016 to ask some questions!
1. You won quite a few awards this season. How does it feel to know readers enjoy your writing as much as they do?
Answer: I know, and it’s crazy! I’m honestly still in shock about it, because this time last year was when I won my first award for another one of my fics, The Story of Us, and it’s just crazy to see how much has changed. It sometimes doesn’t feel real to me to know that people around the world are actually enjoying my work, because my writing is something that I’ve kept very close to me for my whole life, so to share it and receive this kind of response is just mind blowing. Without sounding too cheesy, I can’t thank everybody enough.
2. In Come and Fade Me, how would you describe the relationship between Mira and Harry in one sentence?
Mira and Harry’s relationship is probably the most interesting one that I’ve ever written. But if I were to actually describe it in one sentence….I’d say “Mira and Harry are two people that are actually a lot more similar than they’d think.” That sentence kind of sucks, but I couldn’t really think of anything else, and that does seem to sum at least a little bit up!
3. Come and Fade Me has quite a few characters. Do you find it hard to keep up with that many characters and how they tie into the story as you write?
I knew from the start that I wanted Come and Fade Me to be a character-based story, and even though there are so many different people to write, it’s never really been a challenge for me to keep up with all of them. They all have different personalities and connections to each other, and it’s a lot of fun to see how they tie in with Mira and the story in general as it goes along.
4. What about Mira would make readers feel a connection with her?
I’ve received a lot of comments from readers telling me that they feel really connected to Mira, which means so much to me, because from the start, I’ve tried to make her a relatable character. She is nowhere near perfect, something which has been pointed out a lot, and I’m glad people are picking up on that. She’s a 20-year-old college student who’s confused about a lot of things in her life–her friends, her family, her future. On one hand, she has this overbearing family always telling her what to do and she’s tried to escape from that, but she still has this voice in her head telling her that she needs to be better, which is something that I think a lot of people relate to. Another example is her racial identity and a lot of the confusion people have surrounding it. I think that race is a subject that hasn’t really been touched up on very much in fic, but it is a big part of my life, being a brown Arab-American, and so I wanted to channel a lot of that into Mira. How she’ll always be getting comments like “where are you really from”, that have affected me a lot in my life, seem to have affected lots of other readers too. For me, Mira is a character that represents many different things and isn’t afraid to speak out about them, and to see so many readers connect with that is probably one of the best things about writing this story.
5. Let’s move on to Bring It Back. This story won Most Unique. What do you think makes it so unique?
I think the main thing that makes Bring It Back so unique is its concept. When I was coming up with it, the first idea that I had was I wanted to write a story where Harry wasn’t as happy as he seems to be in other fics. I realized I couldn’t really do very much with that, especially since there were already so many other fantastic stories like that, and so I came up with the idea of having him go to university to try to run away from this life that he didn’t want anymore. But something has happened, something that the whole world knows about–but the readers don’t just yet–that has made it impossible for him to escape who he was, and I think that’s kind of what makes it so different.
6. Sum up Norah in 3 words. Sum up Harry in 3 words.
Hmm. For Norah, I think I’d do insecure, introverted, and emotional. For Harry, he’s guarded, insecure like Norah, and he doesn’t trust easily (that’s not one word, but still).
7. Harry is a celebrity going back to university. Can you give a little insight into how he feels others see him without giving away too much?
At first, it was easy to imagine how most people would think a celebrity going back to university would feel, but I knew that with Harry, I would have to go deeper than that. There are all these issues of his past that he tries so hard to keep locked up, but with him, everyone in the world already thinks that they know everything about him. They judge him based on what they’ve read online, and he’s so used to having people around him want things from him, because that has essentially been his life since he was sixteen, and so he is always quick to jump to conclusions whenever he meets new people–that they don’t want to know the real him, they just want a piece of “Harry Styles”, which has happened far too often to him in his life.
8. Now for in a parallel universe. This is, yet another, university fic. Do you enjoy writing stories with a university setting?
I really do! I think that stories set in college are probably right in the middle of my comfort zone, which is why I like to write them so much. The only problem with university fics, at least for me, is that so many people are writing them so you always have to try and find a way to make yours different, which I hope I’ve succeeded with.
9. Describe Quinn and Harry’s relationship in one word.
Easygoing. Or natural. Both work, I think.
10. What author(s) and/or stories have inspired you the most in your writing?
For books, I get a lot of my inspiration when writing fic from two of my favorite contemporary authors, Rainbow Rowell and Deb Caletti. They’re both so skilled at keeping an interesting plot while having a different, diverse group of characters revolving around it and I’m always inspired by them. For fic authors, though, Boys Don’t Cry by oxygenstyles and Sugar on the Asphalt by aboutfalling are probably the two fics that have changed me, my writing, and my life in general. I love those stories and I’ve probably reread them a million times.
11. Where can readers discover more about you?

Interview with booksncoffee
We got with booksncoffee who won Best Niall with the story Are We Electric? for the 1D Shadow Awards Summer Edition 2016 to ask some questions!
1. Having this as a Niall fic wasn’t your original plan. What made you lean more towards Niall as the main boy?
Answer: Okay so, originally it wasn’t a Niall fic, but as I read what I’d written and planned more and more, I was beginning to see Niall in my head instead of the original boy. Everything about Are We Electric? just screams Niall to me and that’s how I changed it.
2. What do you think are Hanna’s weaknesses and strengths?
Answer: One of her weaknesses is definitely her inability to keep up with her friends (like going out for a drink and all that) which ultimately leads to them drifting apart. Also, let’s not forget how dependent she is on caffeine. Oh and another one of her weaknesses is that she has this tendency to overthink. As for her strengths, she’s forgiving, she’s cool (as in she doesn’t freak out easily except for when she didn’t get enough sleep like in this first chapter) and she’s someone who takes her study seriously.
3. What gave you the idea to write Are We Electric?
Answer: Hmm I think those tumblr prompts did! I saw one that said something like “i’m running on a 3 hours sleep and you just spilled my coffee” so I just had to write it. However, it was Ira who supported my idea in changing it from the original boy to Niall.
4. As a writer what do you find the hardest scene is to write?
Answer: I’ve always struggled with actions, always have and always will probably. And inAre We Electric? the first scene involved Hanna running into Niall and chaos ensued, and I had a really hard time writing that scene. It’s also difficult to write a date scene because I’ve always tried to come up with one that is not overused.
5. Where can readers discover more about you?
Answer: Tumblr and 1DFF, definitely! Or if my readers want to know more about me as in not fic wise, they can follow me on snapchat (erizaxx) or instagram (azmiraeriza).
Interview With lifeinblueprint
We got with lifeinblueprint who won Best Comedy for Love Is A Laserquest for the 1D Shadow Awards Summer Edition 2016 to ask some questions!
1. Where did the idea for this story come from?
Answer: LLQ was inspired by my own wildly absurd group of friends in uni, a night spent watching The Bridget Jones Diary, and my selfish desire to write a terrible love/hate story with cheesy dialogue, a bunch of banter, and lots andlots of music playlists.
2. Comedy can be a hard genre to write, do you find writing a comedic story struggling at times?
Answer: I find that a story or fic that can literally make me laugh out loud is a really admirable quality to have, so I tried to make LLQ as humor-filled as possible. It almost satirizes all the soppy and romantic bits in a story because weknow they’re cliche but read these fics, anyway. I think that’s what makes writing a“rom-com” fic so enjoyable, and definitely comes the easiest to me as opposed to more emotional and serious plot lines!
3. What has been your favorite scene to write so far?
Answer: My favorite scene to write so far was definitely in chapter 7 when Hinx are in bed and they’re asking each other all these entirely absurd questions seconds before they’re about to do the dirty! (Terrible summary, I know.) Those kinds of scenes are the mini-climaxes in a fic that are meant to be emotional and special and entirely broody and I think it really epitomized the comfortably unique and banter-filled friendship/relationship/whatever they have when they’re laughing about it instead.
4. Sum up this story in one sentence for potential readers.
Answer: A uni fic in which Binx Waters is a born and bred eccentric with an unsuccessful blog, a sexually-charged best mate named Archie, a most serious crush on Zayn Malik, and an ever-growing hit list that certified asshole Harry Styles is sitting right at the top of.
5. Where can readers discover more about you?
Answer: My tumblr www.lifeinblueprint.tumbr.com–my ask is always open!
Interview With francescahoy
We got with francescahoy who won Best Dialogue for Cigarette Daydreams for the 1D Shadow Awards Summer Edition 2016 to ask her some questions.
1. Can you tell readers a little about your story Cigarette Daydreams?
Answer: Cigarette Daydreams…what to say about this story…gosh, it’s been so long! It’s basically an art uni-au about the struggles of relationships with a pretty big twist. I guess it’s sort of the nitty gritty parts of relationships, with friends, family and significant others, as well as the ups and downs that come along with those relationships. It’s told in little chronologic vignettes, little snapshots of Stella’s (the main character) life whilst in England.
2. What gave you the idea for this story?
Answer: Cigarette Daydreams was a story I never thought would happen. The original idea was this really small paragraph long snippet of information that I had floating around in word documents since like 2012, I think? It was supposed to be a Jonas Brothers fic and I couldn’t find inspiration for it. Then, when NaNoWriMo 2014 came around, I really wanted to participate but I had no story ideas. I scrambled around at the last minute to find something and ended up stumbling across that same silly untitled word document and the story sort of fell into place. I knew I wanted to tell it in snapshots and the ending (sorry, guys) came soon after I planned out the format of the story thanks to One Day.
3. Is there a scene in this story that you struggled to write more than others?
Answer: Spoiler alert (it’s an older fic though, is it possible to still spoil it?): chapter eleven was so hard to write. I struggled a lot trying to get Zayn’s death “right,” I guess. Really, chapters ten, eleven and twelve were the toughest to write, but they also ended up being my three favorite chapters.
4. Do you find dialogue is easier to write than description?
Answer: Yes! I feel like my true “writing skills” or whatever you want to call them lie in dialogue and banter! Cigarette Daydreams was always meant to be a more visual story, but I cannot escape dialogue. It’s my favorite and I think what people say really shows a lot about them!
5. Where can readers discover more about you?
Answer: On my Tumblr (@fromherlips)! I love to chat! My ask box is always, always, always open and I’m always down for a nice convo!
Interview with aboutfalling
We got with aboutfalling, who won Favorite Author for the 1D Shadow Awards Summer Edition 2016 to ask her some questions.
1. You won Favorite Author. Why do you think people enjoy your writing as much as they do?
Answer: I don’t know why anyone likes my writing! I’m not even saying that just to say it. It baffles me everyday when I think about the people my writing has reached! I’ve written some bold and memorable characters! I write decent dialogue! I’m funny on occasion! So I don’t know why people have stuck around, but I’m really glad they did!
2. When did you first realize writing was something you loved to do?
Answer: When I was in 7th grade, I was watching One Tree Hill and I didn’t like a storyline and I realized that I could change that if I wanted to and that’s when I realized I loved to write!
3. What has been your favorite fanfic to write as of now?
Answer: Definitely Sugar and Teacakes! There was so much character development in Sugar and then to see Grace and Harry grow in Teacakes… it was some of my best writing, I think!
4. Are there any writers who have inspired you?
Answer: Sarah Dessen is everything I strive to be in a writer!
5. Where can readers discover more about you?
Answer: Readers can listen to me cry about anxiety, boys, and Harry Styles over on justanchorandhope.tumblr.com
