WISHCASTING—finally I have a word to describe the sugar-coated delusions coming out of nearly everyone including places like The Guardian. While wishcasting is not surprising coming from a corporate media too afraid to make a political endorsement for Harris (did they know something about the election outcome before the rest of us?), it is especially disheartening and DANGEROUS hearing it from left-leaning organizations. These same groups who have spent the last three months telling us the cataclysmic consequences of trump being elected are now wishcasting about staying positive and strategies for 2026. What happened to the white-supremacist, christo-fascist DICTATORSHIP that they absolutely said would occur if trump was elected? Was all the hyperbole just an attempt to get clicks and views?
Maybe. However, if you LISTEN to what trump and vance SAID, LOOK at their ACTIONS, and READ their Project 2025 PLAN, it is quite clear that trump and his billionaire buddies ARE planing to create an AUTHORITARIAN REGIME under their control.
And it will not be that hard to do. All they need is the flimsiest of excuses to declare MARTIAL LAW. Declaring martial law suspends civil rights (public protest; free speech), allows for executive orders that usurp Congressional and Judicial powers, and can even postpone elections indefinitely.
Absolutely ALL of the wishcasting in the press and from many ardent Harris supporters presumes that we have an unbiased, functioning judicial system (already gone), free and fair elections, and the right/ability to engage in civil protest. Nope. Authoritarian governments do not allow ANY of those things—just ask the average Russian.
Need another example? Look at what happened in Germany after Hitler was elected in 1933. The German people did not get to vote in a free and democratic election agin until 1946. And if you read German press accounts shortly after Hitler’s election, they are full of fantastically positive outlooks for the future—WISHCASTING.
The DANGER of all this wishcasting in 2024 America is that it is making people who NEED to be planning their own safety complacent. It is encouraging those who should be actively questioning and investigating 2024 election outcomes to be complacently silent. Wishcasting allows people to ignore the increasingly disturbing stories about trump’s new administration. Wishcasting allows the majority to dismiss the escalation of everyday hate speech and violence toward women and minorities (“my body…”).
WISHCASTING is a powerful drug that allows one to hallucinate a happy future based on a past life that is no longer possible. It numbs us into inaction and complacency until the day when reality whacks us in the face and we awake from our wishing.
Do NOT fall for the sedative of wishes.
