Pulptober 2025 Day 22-Crimefighting Crossover-Detective Conan & Kindaichi Case Files: The Encounter of Two Great Detectives

I once saw a Japanese fan art depicting a high school detective and a child detective chatting happily on a plane.The atmosphere seemed peaceful,but the guy sitting next to them had a panicked look on his face and was sweating profusely,as if he realized that a tragedy was about to happen.That guy had good reason to panic,and we can know what would happen when the two teenage detectives meet each other by a crossover video game,Detective Conan & Kindaichi Case Files: The Encounter of Two Great Detectives.

This is a suspense adventure game released for the Nintendo DS as part of the 50th anniversary commemoration of the founding of Weekly Shonen Sunday and Weekly Shonen Magazine,and as the name suggests,it is a crossover work between Kindaichi Case Files and Detective Conan.Hajime Kindaichi is the protagonist of Kindaichi Case Files,he is the grandson of the great detective Kosuke Kindaichi and also has excellent reasoning skills.His companions include childhood best friend Miyuki Nanase,Inspector Isamu Kenmochi,and police detective Kengo Akechi,and he usually solve serial murders that occur in closed environments.Conan Edogawa is actually the genius high school detective Shinichi Kudo,and after being forced by a criminal syndicate called Black Organization to take an experimental drug during an investigation and becoming the size of an elementary school student,he changed his name to Conan Edogawa and continued to solve various types of cases which are mainly single homicides.

The stage for the cases is called Yuyami Island.Conan Edogawa,along with his childhood friend (and the girlfriend of him as Shinichi Kudo) Ran Mori,Ran's father Kogoro Mori,and his classmates,three kids of the "Junior Detective League",travel to the tropical resort,Yuyami Island, with plane tickets from Dr.Hiroshi Agasa (A talented inventor who assisted him).Conan became interested in the mysterious disappearances that had occurred on the island and wanted to travel there to unravel the mystery.On the other side,Hajime Kindaichi received a letter and a ticket from his middle school classmate,Misa Toba.Misa asks him to "save the island from the terrible event that is about to happen."Therefore,Kindaichi,along with Inspector Kenmochi and Miyuki Nanase,traveled to the island to rescue Misa and prevent the incident.The two sides came to the island for their own purposes and received information about "the tragedy of 25 years ago" and "another Yuyami Island," but initially didn't knew what they're about.Things get pretty scary when the murders start happening one after another:The total number of victims is more than ten (referring only to victims with known names),and if victims from past incidents and victims with unknown names are included,the number is far much higher.It's quite devastating that even by the standard of Kindaichi's experience.The murders that occurred at the time involved events from many years ago and complex relationships between people,and there were many murderers,so the nature of the incidents as a whole was closer to Kindaichi's original series.

Each chapter of the game switches between the perspectives of Kindaichi and Conan as they solve the case.By investigating suspicious locations,collecting evidence and testimonies,and utilizing keyword combinations,players can gradually approach the core of the case.Only in the last chapter can the player choose which protagonist to use,and different choices will affect the final ending.Many parts of this game are geared towards all ages,so the puzzles are quite simple.Specifically,the storyline presents the key clues quite clearly and intuitively before players are asked to choose an answer,so I believe that most players' answers are almost always correct.However,it still took considerable effort to wrote the truth of the matter(The script was written by Kazutaka Kodaka who later participated in the creation of the Danganronpa series.),and there will be some a bit of difficult mini-games interspersed in the plot.It is said that some people even get stuck in the bomb defusal game and need to try multiple times to pass the level,or they are unable to go to the ending of the story because of this.

By the way,Hajime Kindaichi was actually just a finger away from a truth:He almost deduced Conan's true identity,but gave up because he thought the hypothesis of "a man turning into a child" couldn't be true(After all,Kindaichi's life is still relatively close to reality,except for a few supernatural things and Yoichi Takato's "magic"),and finally this honor was taken by Lupin III gang in the next crossover project of Detective Conan.

In the 1960s and 1970s,a style called "Social School" became popular in japanese detective novels.These novels emphasized reflecting social issues,describing the background of the case and the motives of the criminals in detail,while reasoning and trickery were placed in a relatively secondary position.It was not until the 1980s that some Japanese detective novelists began to create works that imitated classical forms and were relatively free of realism.This new style was called "New Honkaku" (this term corresponds to the Japanese word "Honkaku" for classical whodunit).The definition of New Honkaku is debated,but these subgenres do exhibit some common characteristics,including an emphasis on the novelty and flamboyance of the mysteries and tricks,while downplaying their realism;specifically,a story might depict a murderer building a house in order to kill a person,if this were necessary for the trick.In 1981,the famous New Honkaka novelist Soji Shimada created The Tokyo Zodiac Murders,which is hailed as the first New Honkaku mystery novel,and the detective of the story,Kiyoshi Mitarai,is the first New Honkaku great detective.

Kiyoshi Mitarai is a complete weirdo.His mood swings were extreme,sometimes he seemed to be suffering from depression,and sometimes he would excitedly do strange things like dancing Zulu dances or barking like a dog.He is very focused on things that interest him,but he gets bored easily,for example,he was once passionate about astrology and worked as an astrologer,even remembering people's birthdays more easily than their names,but he later almost completely forgot about astrology,so that his assistant Kazumi Ishioka suspected he had amnesia.He loved dogs so much that he would bring dogs borrowed from other places to his home.He dropped out of Kyoto University while studying medicine because he hated animal experiments.He hates women due to his past experiences, but he is a person who believes in gender equality,and tend to judge people based on their character and abilities.Also,his name 御手洗潔means "toilet cleaning" in Japanese,and as a result he was bullied and traumatized as a child.

There is no doubt that he is a genius.He has an IQ of over 300,and has demonstrated excellent observation and reasoning skills since childhood,and continued to solve difficult mysteries throughout kindergarten and elementary school.He once opened a detective agency with Ishioka,and became famous because of Ishioka's records of their investigative experiences.He is also a versatile person.In addition to being a professor of brain neuroscience,he is also proficient in psychology,genetic engineering,meteorology,astronomy,history,surgery,chem and so on.It is worth mentioning that he knows almost all the languages in the world and could master Latin vocabulary word by word within a week.(However,he couldn't read ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics in The Crystal Pyramid.)Also,he is proficient in playing many musical instruments,especially guitar,and his ability is not inferior to that of professional guitarists.

By the way,many of the mysteries solved by Kiyoshi Mitarai have quite gorgeous and exaggerated appearances,such as a doll appearing in the air outside the window of a strangely tilted house,someone witnessing a monster like the one from ancient Egyptian mythology,a victim being drowned in a closed room high in a crystal pyramid,a corpse actually moving a distance on its own,etc.These mysteries may seem even impossible happen,but eventually the great detective would uncovers a truth(which often far more prosaic than it's appearances).
