This week’s Females of Metal Friday is Kayla Dixon, currently vocalist for three different bands, Witch Mountain, Dress the Dead, and most recently Ventersea.

Trained in classical, jazz and musical theatre vocals, Kayla has been performing since the age of 13.

She has participated in productions at Studio Theatre in Washington DC, Levine School of Music, Interlochen Center for the Arts.

I stumbled upon Kayla perusing YouTube for now post idea. It was the video “Become the Wave” by Ventersea. Listening to her opening vocals, I was like holy shit!! 😲😲 And then she hits you with some of the most amazing cleans. 🫨🫨 It was right there I knew I had this week’s featured artist, and I had my video to include as well! Further research, I discovered she was also briefly the replacement singer for Helion Prime’s singer Heather Michele when she left the band.

I hope you’ll listen to, and like, Kayla’s vocals as much as I have.

Oh my god. Oh my GOD. *explodes* I am hyperventilating. I never thought anyone would find any more about this show how did you FIND it?! I thought it was going to be lost media forever, I guess the video still is but a script is almost as good. O_o I am amazed.

Ok I'm not going to read this yet. I was going to the print place to print some stuff today so I'm going to print this and then read it in a binder and then make a post of thoughts sometime in the future

On the 12th of June, 1985, Megadeth came out with Killing Is My Business . . . And Business is Good, their debut album.

For some people, the standout track on an album full of them is "Mechanix,"for others it's the title track. A third kind pick "The Skull Beneath the Skin." But for me, it's "These Boots."

On this date in 1999, Icelandic orchestral post-rock band Sigur Ros released their second album, Agaetis Byrjun.

And,

on this date in 2012, Oregon doom metal band Witch Mountain released their second album with Uta Plotkin, Cauldron of the Wild.

Wednesday, December 18: Witch Mountain, "Foxy Mule"

“Foxy Mule” came out long before Witch Mountain brought in Ula Plotkin, and while the track didn’t suffer for that, her vocals definitely would’ve given the number a little something extra.  As it was, the track offered what could possibly be described as coffeehouse doom: it came out in 2000 but had an early ’90s aesthetic with its formlessness and insouciance, reveling in its heaviness but also not making a big deal of it.  At this stage the group was just a trio, so there was a lot of open space and “Foxy Mule” was all vibes and swagger more so than doom, which was fine but didn’t promise bigger things to come.  And apparently Witch Mountain felt the same, since they disappeared for a full decade before reemerging with Plotkin and a much more focused approach.
