I thought I would get in on the #topnine thing this year! It's been a really amazing year. I moved to Leisureland and began my #leisurelandchronicles adventure, leaving family and friends and a lot of useless junk in Portland. It is really a new adventure. Before now I never had a woodstove, or endless train tracks to walk down, or had to take care of chickens. I had to sell almost everything I owned to fit into a tiny house/cabin and live like we were camping until we figured out a rudimentary power bank. It's starting to look like fall in the woods!! Mist settling over the river and the trees before the sun burns it off every morning. Certainly makes feeding the cat feel more like a fairy tale. The leaves have fallen, the dock is out of the river, and woodsmoke fills Leisureland as the dark half of the year starts in the woods. The River House is up on stilts, adding to the cold of the mornings as the frigid air surrounds all of it. Making a fire in the woodstove that lasts is a skill with which I am inexperienced, but I am getting better at it, and when I woke up this morning, the coals were still glowing from last night's fire. So I took a photo of the fire I started with no help and no lighters in a moment of primal celebration. * * I really like fire as a way of making offerings in a land where my gods and my ancestors did not originate. I love the land, and #Oregon is the home of my soul, but I remember that I am of European ancestry and that my roots are far from here. I do not pour alcohol on stones or on the ground, as many pagans do, but instead into a fire, where it will not be consumed by a land whose peoples were so often hurt by alcohol. If I am sacrificing food rather than consuming it as an offering, I burn it like it is part of a funeral pyre and the gods might receive it on the other side. * * Fire plays a huge role in my brand of Norse witchcraft. Witches were born of fire, as Gullveig was burned three times and was thrice reborn. It is said that Gullveig was the goddess Freyja in disguise, speared and burned for being a völva long before Odin hung from the tree. Witches died of fire, burned alive during witch hunts of the middle ages. Fire is a way to get to the gods, a natural force that never seems to lose its magic despite being explained by science. I am so lucky to be the proud owner of a @byamillia necklace! My beloved @artofnidavellir bought her for me as a surprise for my two year anniversary of being a witch. She is beautiful, almost a mint color and incredibly reassuring as she lays on my chest. And I think her sister is still for sale! She's pointier, like a pendulum. * * A few months ago, I went through the Spirit Death, and the final step was to let go of my beloved green pendulum in favor of learning to read runes. I felt bare without her, and now I feel whole again with this beauty. * * I usually post most of my journey as a witch on Tumblr as agoraphobicwitch. I realize I haven't done a "Get to Know The Witch" thing yet, and I've got new followers. A basic rundown of the person behind the cat photos: I'm almost 25, I've been a witch for two years, and I've been practically married to a blacksmith for those magical two years. I live on the Siuslaw river on a commune founded by hippie preppers getting ready for Y2K, and I love it. If you want to know more about me, keep reading! * * @artofnidavellir and I met through the Society for Creative Anachronism, a worldwide group of historical reenactors. They introduced me to paganism and to the Norse culture; without them, I would never have found Àsatru or Gaelic Polytheism. I can barely remember a time in my life when it didn't permeate my life in subtle ways. I primarily reenact two personas: 1585 Scotland, where I do Shakespearean performances; and Vorangian-era Norse, where I practice my craft and sing Norse songs. * * In a previous life, I lived in Portland, OR and Ashland, OR, where I was an actress and theatre technician. That changed when I started showing symptoms of agoraphobia and social phobia. I tried to go to school three times, and in the end, I was stuck in my house missing the days when I did meaningful things. I turned to witchcraft to give my life meaning. * * I became a witch when my dresser was haunted by what I lovingly call a "sexual angst-ergeist" from the previous owner, who kept a sort of shrine to his lack of love life on top. It would sneak up behind me when I went from my bed to my door, so that shit needed to go. Soon after, I was scrolling through Tumblr for inspiration, doing research on galdrastafir, and talking with a goddess. * * I wear this shirt proudly. My ancestry, chosen and inherited, is full of witches and spirit workers. My great-grandmother was an oracle, my grandfather an exorcist. My goddess, Freyja, was burned in Odin's hall three times for the corrupting influence of seidr, and she rose from the ashes all three times.
