When Jack first met Urban in kindergarten, it was like he met his platonic soulmate. They were inseparable from that day forward. Their friend group would grow and shrink and grow again but one thing remained and that was their tight friendship.
Growing up, your relationship with Urban was like any brother-sister dynamic. You bickered often but as you both grew older, your maturity grew as well.
You remember distinctly the first time Jack made your little heart flutter. It was back in elementary school when Urban went out to the park to meet with his friends and you joined him.
__
“Urban? Can I come play with you?” you ask as you watch him shove his feet into his runners. Urban scoffed and shook his head, his blond hair moving with him. “No. You’re a girl,” he frowned. “You won’t like the games we play—”
“But I wanna go to the park,” you interrupt him. “Pleaseee!”
Your dad who had heard the conversation turned to look at Urban with a raised brow. “Take your sister with you. You know we can’t let her go alone,” he stated matter of factly. You were three years younger than Urban—currently he was in 7th grade while you were in 4th. For your safety you couldn’t go out alone. And since Urban knew the rules, he threw his head back with a groan as he reluctantly agreed. “Fineeee. Grab your bike,” he muttered sourly.
You grin and run out after him. When you make it to the park, part of you wishes you hadn’t been so adamant about joining Urban. Seeing all his friends made you a bit nervous because some of the guys in the older grades were usually a bit more mean. The only person you really felt comfortable around was Jack since he was always over and around Urban.
As Urban approached his friends, Copelan pointed at you and furrowed his brows. “Why’d you bring your sister?” he asked.
Urban shrugged, “my dad forced me. So y’all gotta be nice,” he mumbled, already beginning to climb up the playground with Copelan following him.
In that time, Jack took the opportunity to turn to you and smile, his adorable crooked teeth on full display. “Hi Y/N,” he greeted.
“Hi,” you greet back shyly.
“You’re in Clay’s class this year right?” Jack asked, pushing his glasses up his nose to which you nod.
Jack kicked around some of the sand with the toe of his shoe as he spoke. “You know he likes you. Like…Like-likes you.”
“But I don’t like him,” you reply back firmly, your hands on your hips sassily. Jack furrowed his brows. “Why not?”
“Because he’s only nice to me when we’re alone but he’s mean to me when he’s around his friends,” you explain with a frown. Jack nodded in understanding. “Well do you like me?” he ended up asking.
You pause a moment in thought before you smile softly and nod. “Yeah…because you’re nice to me all the time,” you hum. Your response causes him to grin. “Okay…do you wanna play manhunt with us? I’m gonna be it.”
Your cheeks heat up in embarrassment as you shook your head. “No it’s fine. I’m not that fast and I always get caught first.”
Jack only shrugged, “it’s okay. You can be my helper instead. C’mon,” he mused with a smile, grabbing onto your hand and pulling you to run with him to notify everyone of the game.

Urban blew out a puff of smoke before he turned to look at Jack. Currently they were in their van headed back to Louisville for a much needed break. “So you gonna avoid my sister again when we’re back in Louisville?” Urban mused in question with a knowing smirk on his lips.
Jack scoffed and pretended like he didn’t know what his best friend was talking about. “I don’t understand what you mean,” he mumbled. Urban let out a chuckle as he took in another drag. “It’s so obvious you liked her growing up,” Urban pointed out. “Plus I saw you stalking her IG the other day.”
Jack’s cheeks heated up instantly at being called out, his cheeks tinting pink. “I’m pretty sure your sister fucking hates me.”
Urban shrugged, “maybe...but she deserves someone good. The last guy she had a thing with cheated on her and got the girl pregnant.”
Jack stayed quiet a moment, scrolling through his phone before he let out a sigh. “Was it that obvious I liked her?”
Urban couldn’t hold back a laugh as he looked at Jack with an incredulous expression. “Dude--you practically drooled whenever she was around and you’d turn so red whenever you talked to her...but then it kinda just stopped. I guess it’s cause you started getting bitches.”
Jack hummed. “Yeah...something like that.”
__
You laid in Jack’s bed as you hummed along to the beat of the music he was currently working on. He looked your way and grinned as he saw you vibing along. “You like it?” he asked.
You nod and sit up with a smile. “Yeah-it sounds dope, J.” Jack chuckled and got up from his desk chair to hover over you and press a soft kiss to your lips. You hummed into it and kept progressing the kiss, flipping the two of you over so that you were on top, your hands tangling in his hair.
This stage of your life was weird. You were 18, about to finish your senior year of highschool while Jack was 21 and pursuing his musical career. Meanwhile Urban was away at college which was the reason why it was so easy to hide the relationship from him and sneak around with Jack to begin with.
As Jack felt your hands move down his body, he knew he couldn't prolong his news for any longer. He eventually pulled away from the kiss, causing you to frown in confusion. “What’s wrong?” you ask him, your hands moving up to his jaw and your thumb stroking his bare face.
Jack sat up which prompted you to get up off of him and sit next to him instead. “Y/N...I’m moving to Atlanta. And Urban decided to join me.”
Your eyes widened, “Urban’s quitting school?” Jack shrugged in response, “well he’s taking a gap year to test it out.”
You bit your lip as the next question that plagues your mind comes out quietly. “Well we can still do long distance...right?” Jack sighed and ran a hand through his hair. “Well that’s what I wanted to talk about...I think we should end whatever we have going on.”
Your brows furrowed as you take in a sharp breath, having to get up to distance yourself from him. “I-I thought we were gonna attempt long distance when I go to college--”
“Y/N I just don't...I don’t want a relationship.”
“What why--”
Jack groaned, “because I don’t wanna be tied down to one person when I’m just starting out my career. Plus don’t you wanna experience college the proper way--”
His response causes you to scoff. “There’s no ‘proper’ way to experience college,” you rebut. “But let me get this straight-- you wanna hoe it out? That’s why you’re breaking up with me?”
Jack clenched his jaw and shook his head in aggravation. “Y/N I’ve made up my mind--”
“Jack that doesn’t make any sense! What does entertaining a bunch of girls have anything to do with making music?” you ask with confusion. “Help me fucking understand because your logic is flawed.”
“For fucks sake--this is exactly why I want to end thing!” Jack yelled, his voice raising. “You’re too fucking demanding and you don’t give me what I want anymore!”
The look you gave Jack at the moment was one of absolute heartbreak as everything seemed to click in your mind. “You slept with her didn’t you?” you choke out, your eyes now gathering with tears. “The one girl that magically shows up to every show you do, big or small? The person you’ve been secretly texting.”
Jack sighed and chose not to confirm nor deny the accusation. “I should’ve known,” you breath out, shaking your head in disappointment as you grab your things. “I’ve done nothing but support you a-and you end up doing this?” you ask, the tears now streaming down your face. “Fuck you Jack Harlow.”

“Look Urban-I’m glad you’re back and all and I do wanna hang out with you but I am not going to the park with you,” you laugh, shaking your head at your brother. “We’re not 12.”
Urban shrugged, “c’mon Y/N--we’re gonna get lit and the guys wanna see you. Even Copelan--”
You shake your head as you laughed, “nah- Copelan’s been freaking me out ever since he shaved his head and got that tattoo,” you shudder. Urban let out a laugh at your reaction as he coaxed you once more. “Jack’s gonna be there,” he stated matter of factly.
You raise a brow at your brother as you cross your arms over your chest. “What makes you think I want to see Jack?” Urban shrugged. “Cos y’all were childhood besties?” he retaliated, clearly oblivious to your past with the curly haired boy. “Just come say hi and leave. Please?”
“Fine.”
Your nerves were at an all time high as you approached the park you were so fond of and had the best memories in. You hadn’t seen Jack since that night when he broke your heart three years prior. As your eyes scanned all of Urban’s friends, you let out a sigh of relief when you noticed Jack wasn't there. Perhaps he was caught up with something or didn’t want to be noticed so he avoided coming. This allowed you to relax and truly enjoy being with everyone.
You spent about an hour reminiscing about old memories and laughing at the stupid stories the guys got in to when they were younger while Urban and a few others smoked. However, that didn’t last long.
“There he is! Handsome Harlow finally arrived!” one of the guys called out teasingly, causing you to turn your head and take in a sharp breath as you saw none other than Jack himself make his way to the group. Jack laughed at the old nickname before he dabbed everyone up, his eyes going wide once his sight landed on you.
“Y-Y/N,” he breathed out, licking his lips as his eyes raked over your body quickly. He thought you looked absolutely incredible having developed a bit more curves. Somehow in that past three years, you managed to become even prettier than he remembered, having grown into your own style too.
You too thought Jack looked incredibly handsome. You’d seen pictures and videos of his glow up--no doubt also seeing the amount of girls thirsting over him as well which hurt to say the least because he made it clear he left you for that attention.
“Hi Jack,” you mumble, shuffling slightly to go stand next to Urban, the both of you leaning against the park picnic table. Urban gave you a slight concerned look and you merely shrugged at your older brother.
The rest of the gathering went smoother than expected. You opted to staying quiet for most of the conversations which many, specifically Jack and Urban, noticed but chose not to comment on. Jack was anxious the entire time. He kept nervously glancing your way but you continued to avoid his gaze. At one point you accidentally made eye contact with him which made your heart rate pick up and for you to become flustered.
Biting your lip, you quickly pull out your phone to look at the time before you turn to Urban. “I think I’m gonna head back.” Urban furrowed his brows. “It’s not even that late. C’mon stay longer and we can walk back together--”
“No Urban I wanna leave,” you tell him quietly. Urban gives you another look before he sighs and agrees to let you go reluctantly. You bid your goodbyes to the group and begin walking away. Jack couldn’t take it anymore and he jogged after you, reaching for your arm. “Y/N-wait--”
You instantly yank your arm away from his grasp which Urban noticed but thankfully you both were far enough and out of earshot.
“D-Don’t fucking touch me Jack,” you warn, your eyes beginning to tear up. “Please-I just wanna talk,” Jack begged. “It’s been so long and- I just wanna talk,” he breathed out. You shook your head as you scoffed. “We have nothing to talk about,” you say through gritted teeth before you practically storm off.
Two hours later and Urban finally comes back home and he immediately storms up to your bedroom, walking in without a care and shutting the door behind him. “What the fuck happened between you and Jack?” he demanded. “And don’t fucking pretend like nothing did happen because I can tell there’s something off so spill it.”
You instantly begin to feel cornered, shaking your head and trying to act nonchalant. “Nothing Urb—”
“Cut the fucking bullshit Y/N!” Urban yelled. “If he hurt you then I need to know,” he breathed out, his eyes and tone softening once he saw you on the verge of tears.
You bite your lip to stop it from quivering before you look down at your hands, playing around with the rings on your finger anxiously. “We-we used to date…when you were away at your college,” you say.
Urban sighed and took a seat next to you on your bed. “Did he hurt you?” he asked again.
“He cheated on me,” you croak out, the tears beginning to slide down your cheeks. “He broke up with me because he didn’t want to be ‘tied down’ while he’s starting out his career,” you sniffle, wiping your eyes quickly. “But it’s whatever. I’m over it,” you shrug.
Urban had to clench his jaw to contain his rage. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
You scoffed, “what was I supposed to say?! That I was sneaking around behind your back and seeing your best friend—the same best friend that you were quitting college to be with?!” you exclaim in expaseration. “I couldn’t do that to the both of you,” you say with a sigh.
Urban nodded before he ran a hand through his hair. “Fuck,” he mumbled, shaking his head. He truly didn’t know what to do. “Do you love him?”
You shrug which only prompted Urban to ask again. “Do you love him Y/N?”
“I never stopped…but it’s over.”

Later that night, you’re laying in your bed, the only light illuminanted coming from your phone as you scroll through it. Your breath hitches when you get dm notification from Jack. You sit up and bite your lip as you hover your finger over the notification. You so desperately wanted to ignore him but you were also so compelled to see what he wanted to say.
Jack: I want to talk. Please
You: No.
Jack groaned from his end, his hand moving through his curls anxiously.
Jack: Please Y/N
A sigh leaves your lips before you drag a hand down your face.
You: fine. Say what you gotta say.
Jack: Want to talk in person. Meet me at our old spot in 10?
“Fuck,” you mumble softly, choosing not to respond to him but slipping out of your bed nonetheless and throwing on a sweatsuit. It was late enough that you had to sneak down the stairs so not to be questioned by your family. You slip on your airforces and grab your keys before you head out and meet Jack at the location.
“Jack?” you call out in a mumble, causing the curly haired boy to snap his head around almost instantly at hearing your voice. His eyes lit up and he couldn’t help but smile.
“Hey…didn’t think you were gonna come. You never responded,” he chuckled, his hand coming up awkwardly to rub at his neck.
You look down at your feet momentarily before you pull your head back up to look at him, a hurt look on your features. “What do you want, Jack? Why don’t you want to leave me alone?”
“I miss you,” he breathed out in confession. “I was young and fucking stupid back then and I should have never hurt you the way I did—”
You can’t help but scoff. “You’ve got some fucking nerve Jack. It’s been three years and you’re only starting to feel guilty now huh?”
Jack sighed as he felt himself at a loss for words. “Are you happy Jack?” you ask him, looking at him intently. “Because if you are then you shouldn’t regret your choices. Yeah you hurt me but you got what you wanted didn't you? Everything worked out really well for you so why are you bringing up the past?” you ask in confusion.
“Because I’m not happy,” Jack replied, his blue eyes collecting with tears. “I feel empty. I got asked in an interview recently if I’d ever been in love and I lied through my fucking teeth and said no when I know I’ve always been in love with you,” he breathed out. “It’s always gonna be you. I can fuck around with a hundred bitches but no one does it for me...I know its been three years but every time I think about my future, you’re always in it...I just had to try to get you back.”
His entire confession of love overwhelmed you and you had began crying. “How do you expect me to trust you?” you quietly ask. Jack took the opportunity to take your hands in his, bringing your knuckles up to his lips and pressing soft kisses to the skin. “I don’t expect you to but you need to know that I love you Y/N.”
“Just say you love me too…please,” he practically begged, his hands leaving yours to cup your cheeks.
You give him an apologetic look and shake your head, softly grasping onto his hands to remove them from your face. “I’m sorry, J…but I don’t.”
