Lochlan still isn’t entirely sure why he’s agreed to babysit.
He doesn’t even particularly like children. He remembers being a child, of course, and even though he’d been well ahead of the bell curve of his peers, he also remembers being slow and ignorant and irrational, like all children. Children, simply put, are stupid.
Gunner, on the other hand, is fine. Gunner is great! And it’s not like Lochlan agreed to babysit for very long, just twenty minutes while Gunner stepped out to do whatever errand he needed to run. Lochlan didn’t inquire, because he was too busy squinting at Charlie and charting his growth (one needs to be on the lookout for typical presentation signs of a Reptilian Alien, after all).
So, by the nineteen minute mark, Lochlan has seated himself cross-legged on the floor, and has started presenting just-made flash-cards to Charlie.
Charlie stares uncomprehendingly at the precisely drawn Illuminati symbol that Lochlan’s drawn on the back of one of Gunner’s business cards. “If you react in any way positively to this,” Lochlan cautions him, with great gravity, “I’ll have to categorize you as a potential future enemy.”
Charlie makes a pbbbttt noise at him.
“I’m not entirely sure if that was positive or negative. Can you clarify?” Charlie makes the noise again. “Unhelpful,” Lochlan mutters, then draws another card, this one with the Freemason symbol. “How about this?”
The child continues to make incoherent noises, even as Lochlan hears the apartment door swing open with Gunner’s returning footsteps. “Bad news, Gunner, your child refuses to confirm one way or another if he’s part of the Illuminti.”
