Steve hated Dementors.
Yeah, they’re not the most common of creatures but in the military, chasing some of the worst, it’s more common than for civilians. And Steve hated them. Whenever he and his team had to encounter them, he could never produce a Patronus. He had to rely on someone else on his team to have had a happy enough moment for them to conjure one or else they were all screwed. Even if he had thrilling and exciting and happy-ish memories, none of them were strong enough to conjure a freaking Patronus!
Fast forward to the present where there’s a dangerous escaped criminal on the loose and the Ministry has set loose Dementors to go after them.
Just so happens that the good ole McGarrett Luck comes through and he, Grace, and some other Aloha Girls get lost during a trip and encounter a pack of Dementors.
Steve is terrified because this is the one beast he’s never bested. Give him a Minitour, a Centaur, a dragon! A freaking giant Spider! Anything but this!
Steve pulls his wand out, but it shakes with nerves...he’s prepared to distract the Dementors and tell Grace and girls to make a run for it, but he knows that when they finish with him, they won’t stop.
He forces the spell out...at first it’s just sparks. When Grace speaks, fear in her voice with ‘Uncle Steve?’ Steve’s resolve strengthens. He’s not alone anymore. He’s not just a miserable soldier. He’s got a family now...and hell yeah he’s happier!
He thinks of his team, he thinks of the good they do on the island...he thinks of Grace...and he thinks of Danny. Their first I love yous, platonically and romantically, thinks of all the times he thinks he’s breathed his last breath, only to wake up to Danny, he thinks of their first kiss...
