“Because I’m not.” It was so plain, so damn straight forward. Jeremy felt like he was stating nothing but a fact. Wasn’t this as clear to everyone as it was for him? Somehow a town hero had a magical child with the bravest woman half-alive and they were cursed with him? It was a sick joke, most probably a karmic cosmic joke from fucking with magic to have a half dead child.

“I could stand here and lie and tell you that I’m not pushing too hard and I am enough. But everyone knows that’s not true.” He flipped open a fresh pack of camels and ripped off the foil. “I like to think I’m not the worst thing that could have happened. Maybe the pregnancy would have failed and I wouldn’t be constantly failing my parents…or YOU. But maybe that’s better, who knows. I’m just trying to do my best, man. But I know it’s not even SLIGHTLY enough.”
